Perfect book for Warner Bros. cartoon fans

I have to admit I had reservations when I saw this at the store. I had not been impressed by the Superman volume or the other editions to come out under this series because so much of it was devoted to modern versions of the main characters. But this book is a visual treat, as well as being very informative about the history of the animated cartoon at Warner Bros. Many model sheets, cels, posters, etc. are here indepth throughout this wonderful volume.
Beck has written extensively about the WB cartoons before, so DK made a great choice in picking him for this book. Even though the targeted audience for this series is kids, the adult, like me, will love this beautifully put-together homage to the best cartoons to come out of Hollywood. I am so glad very little in this book talks about recent efforts; instead, they chose the Golden Age (the 30s, 40s, 50s) and I couldn't be happier.

Beck comes through!!!

Jerry Beck's Looney Tunes Book for DK Publishing comes through as a real winner. With more "in-jokes" than DK's previous Disney edition, this text is sure to please.
The work shows. From the (every character who appeared in a WB cartoon)painting/picture that appears on the inside cover to the comic book covers chosen, this is a fun read.
One of the best "jokes" and keeping with the personality of the characters, Daffy appears on the last page of the Bugs section, announcing that "this is where the real fun begins."
It's great. Some of the "extras" which include humerous sections on the Road Runner cartoons, and a mentioning of some of the gags used in those animated flicks.
Fun for the kids, and I'm sure Beck must have enjoyed putting this together. These books are great for the youngsters to get an overview of the history of WB, and the same for the Disney edition.
Beck also spends a bit of time on the new Looney Toons film coming up, and the recent Duck Dodgers series. It would have been nice if a few pages could have been spent on Tiny Toons, which did have some ties to the older characters. Two pages on Space Jam would have been nice.
Hmm. DK has done Disney and now Looney Tones, I wonder if DK will do Woody Woodpecker/Universal animation next. Maybe Paramount's Popeye. I'd hate for this one to be the last of these. ...

Buy it for the ACME catalogue alone

There seem to be numerous visual guides around by these publishers for all kinds of movies and television shows some of which are rather average, but Looney Tunes is a must have. Inside is a substantial amount of information on the major cartoon characters such as Bugs, Daffy, Taz, Sylvester, Yosemite, Wile E as well as minor less known stars such as Torpid Toad, Pete Puma, Cecil Tortoise and Gossamer. Learn that Daffy and Sylvester have the same voice, just that Daffy's is sped up and other interesting facts. The ACME catalogue is a must for any roadrunner chaser and modern movies with the cartoon characters is another interesting section. A must buy for anyone who has ever been a kid and owned a TV.

Good book on how to make extra money

I am always looking for new ways to make money. This book provides great insight into how to make audio and visual products to sell. The author put together some really great resources that will assist most of us and I appreciate that many of the items are free.

I really wish the author had spent a bit more time talking about podcasts in particular ans offering some ways to make money in that regards. Asides from that, this book is excellent and well worth the price!

Not for guitarists that can't read music

Notice that in all positive reviews the reviewer has had some kind of prior music experience whether it be playing in band or orchestra in high school or whatever.
If you, like myself, have no prior musical experience, or you're a guitar player that has been getting by on the pentatonic scale and few others, some chords and learning from tabulature, this book might as well be written in Greek. Terminology is used with no glossary. The book begins with the equivalent of simple addition and goes to calculus by page 5 if you're inexperienced.
Like prior reviewers mentioned, this is really a reference book for people that have already learned these concepts on another instrument.
Not for beginners.

Great book! Even if you do not know how to read music

I play guitar for almost 40 years and played lead guitar professionally for 15 years. This book is very good and very useful even if you do not know how to read music as everything is shown in guitar-tab format as well. You should know how to read chords like am7 or cmaj7 though.
I happen to know more than average about music theory but I found some interesting areas that I did not take in consideration before and it gave me some new ideas and inspirations.
I think this book will be very useful for any serious guitar player starting at the a early-advanced level. I would say it should be a "must" for the advanced player who wants to complete his/her knowledge about music theory on the guitar.
Something for everyone - and the audio samples are really cool!

Comprehensive, intuitive guide for the guitarist wanting to understand theory...

I have been a musician all of my life, since the age of 4, and a guitarist for a decade, since the age of sixteen. I was in high school orchestra and took guitar lessons for a few years, but at no time during any of this did any of my instructors really help me understand music theory. I tried learning a few times by myself, but that always ended in frustration.

Then I found this book. "Music Theory for Guitarists" is the most in-depth, intuitive, and well thought out book on the subject that I have ever come across. After reading this book and completing the exercises in it, I now feel confident in my grasp of music theory in a way I thought would never happen.

This book deftly guides the reader through the journey from the most basic of basics to much more complex topics, such as chord substitution and reharmonization. It also includes an entire chapter on learning to find the key center of songs, which is an incredibly useful skill to have since you can't always tell by ear what key you are in.

Perhaps the most in depth part of this book...the author analyzes the major and minor scales, and all of their modes, in depth. He gives each scale and mode its own section, discussing the nuances of what sets each apart from the others, and giving ideas for how and when to apply it in real world situations. He also goes into detail about building and identifying chords and harmonizing the major and minor scales (a section that has completely reinvented the way I look at writing music.)

I cannot say enough about this book. It has opened my eyes to a subject I thought I was too "stupid" to grasp, and showed me that I was only unable to learn because it had never been presented to me correctly. If you have any weaknesses in your knowledge of music theory, I would strongly recommend that you take advantage of the goldmine of information found in this book. You will likely find yourself, as I have, seeing the language of music in a completely different light, and for the first time really seeing how all Western music is connected at the root.

The core ruleset for Fantasy Flight's Star Wars RPG is fantastic. The dice system is dynamic. It simultaneously adjudicates simple tasks and tells a story. The integration of this system into the classes, and rules is seamless. There are so many options, it is dizzying, but easy to understand.

There are 3 core books, this being the 3rd. This long awaited volume contains everything you need to create and play jedi, and force users. Like its predecessors, it is simple, and utilizes the base dice mechanic. This is also my singular complaint.

As beautiful as these books are, they retread too much material. The rules have not changed since the original core book Edge of the Empire. So why include all combat rules, encumbrance, basic equipment, etc.? Rather than include all the same material for a 3rd time, why not just include the material that is new? There are lots of new classes, races, planetary background, npc listings, some new equipment, feats, etc. There is more than enough new material to justify its own book, without charging full price for a core book.

I love the system, and this gives us the heart of Star Wars: the Force. There is still a lot of new material, and you could run a game with nothing but this book. The quality of the paper, binding, and artwork, is fantastic. I recommend the book, with the knowledge that you are buying a some of the same information all over again.

Reasons it gets four stars
A solid, narrative system, that's easy to use once you get passed the goofy custom dice, and fun to play.
The classes / specialization really do cover almost every reasonably imaginable force user concept... And do it well.
Powerful yet balanced, more so than previous versions of the Star Wars RPG (mainly because you're not playing temple Jedi, you're playing force users doing their best to self teach through old Holocrons and the rare Jedi mentor of those
