Useful for testing but somewhat difficult to use

Doesn't have any practice problems to help you study for a PE exam but there are other materials for that. Also, the organization of information/chapters can make it a little tricky to find what you are looking for. The index could be a little more helpful as well. Took the PE exam and this was essential to answering a couple questions because it had information that was not available in other study materials I was using. Didn't seem useful while studying but proved worthy during exam.

The Most Fascinating Travel Guide I've Ever Read!

Tons of travel books are published every year. Daniel Smith's 100 PLACES YOU WILL NEVER VISIT stands apart from all other such books. If you try and visit the sites detailed in Smith's book, you may end up being warned off by gun-toting guards, carted off to prison or killed! These ain't your typical tourist traps, folks!

Beginning in the Pacific Ocean, Smith takes the reader on a global, guided tour of THE MOST SECRET, INACCESSIBLE, MYSTERIOUS LOCATIONS ON THE PLANET. The sites covered are varied in nature. There are 'religious sites' like the Is Grand Shrine, the Chapel of the Ark of the Covenant, and the Mount Ararat Anomaly; think Noah's Ark! There are government sites like the Oval Office, Government Communications HQ, Fort Knox Bullion Depository, the Pentagon and the Fuhrerbunker. 'Spook' sites include the CIA Headquarters, MI5 Headquarters and Mossad Headquarters. Military bases include the Hainan Submarine Base, Headquarters of Joint Operational Command, Cheyenne Mountain Complex, Diego Garcia and Area 51. Commercial sites include the Federal Reserve Bank of New York's Vaults, Pionen White Mountains Facility and the Bank of England Vaults. Love this book. I am not one that travels and found out about some very informative places and since I am not one that travels, this is a way to see small corners of the world. Great for the person that like to watch NATGEO and or other science channels. An enjoyable book with short reads

Disappointing

While there is much to enjoy about this book, I feel that it is a bit of a con.

A lot of these sites were obvious: Fort Knox, the Oval Office, etc. Is this book telling me something here that I don't know? The author could have tacked on a lot more sites based on places with a lot of security.

Some entries no longer exist: The Amber Room, Bin Laden's destroyed hideout. Some may never have existed. At least he didn't include the Lost City of Atlantis.

There were maybe 10-15 entries that I found intriguing.

Great book keeps things interesting by mixing things up not all the complications are action based some are emotionally or dialogue based. I also love the development of the characters. No Real problems with storyline or characters except how suddenly Byrne was inter grated into the barracks I expected more of a stand off.

There's a reason I binge read this book through the night, on a school night, enthralled by what it holds. Fantastic, the plot is so carefully crafted and it's twists are so unexpected that it's impossible to tell what's happening next. Everything is connected so don't underestimate this book.

Yevgen Barsukov is an IP development manager for battery management systems business units at Texas Instruments. He holds an M.S. in organic chemistry from Kiev National University in the Ukraine and a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Kiel Christian Albrecht University in Germany.

Jinrong Qian is a sector manager and distinguished member of technical staff for battery management systems at Texas Instruments. He holds M.S. degrees in power electronics from both the University of Central Florida and Zhejiang University in China and earned his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

DETAILED BATTERY POWER MANAGEMENT RESOURCE!!!

Authors Yevgen Barsukov and Jinrong Qian, have done an outstanding job of writing a book that aims to make it clear that batteries and battery management electronics that are used, should be able to operate in the most efficient and safest way.

Authors Barsukova and Qian, begin by summarizing the best handling practices based on a particular chemistry for the most common rechargeable battery types in order to ensure the best longevity of the battery; as well as, adequate safety of the device. Next, the authors discuss battery charging algorithms, battery charging system topologies, design considerations, the main battery charger applications, and the popular battery charger ICs.
Then, they show you how to accomplish a remodeling of battery designers’ thinking; and, offer a practical solution to all of the challenges that arise from highly energetic mobile power sources. In addition, the authors discuss why when multiple cells are connected in series, the cell voltage is not always equal to the pack voltage divided by the number of cells. This most excellent book covers rechargeable battery fundamentals, explaining how any battery operates and describing the common factors to consider when choosing a battery. Furthermore, this great book explains the how and why of battery management systems; and, provides would-be designers of battery management systems and chargers with enough information to be successful. Finally, the book combines all of the various pieces of knowledge about battery management, and provides examples of complete battery-operated systems that can be cut-and-pasted into your designs.

Good first text but falls short on details

This is an excellent text to get to know the overall landscape of batteries and power management. I would not recommend paying full price though. The state of the art (almost) is described in reasonable detail. The text falls short in several areas - battery chemistry and how batteries work is treated almost as if the reader were already familiar with the topic. For example the figures on cathodes and anodes and the nomenclature is not clear at all. The use of black and white images of poor resolution makes it hard to use it as a fundamental text. Surely there are excellent images and animations available in color to describe the charging and discharging process in li-ion batteries. Fortunately several university lectures are available to fill in this gap. Another grouse of mine is that while the text claims to discuss fuel gauging algorithms, the finer details which are in some sense public domain by way of patents is treated cautiously. Given the authors are employees of a company, this is understandable from a trade secret point of view but as a text to enthuse the reader the text disappoints. In this regard, some of the app notes from TI or other companies are a better read and free of cost. References to literature are minimal and reader may have to dig into patent documents to really understand how battery gauging works in practice. A final point is the lack of exercises that would make for using this text in a classroom setting. At 50% of full price it was a great buy. I wish the authors take note of the shortcomings and come out with a color print 2nd edition.

Exceptional battery management book

I use this book both for advanced technical training, as well as training people who are new to the battery power management industry. It has a very comprehensive approach and covers topics ranging from battery chemistry fundamentals, battery safety, system considerations, to design examples. I have bought a few extra copies to share with colleagues.

Smaller Book with Less Info than 4th Edition

When I ordered this book, I was anticipating giving away my old 4th edition for a new one with improved information. NOT SO!

The tables, the heart and soul of the book, have fewer foods and not more than the 4th edition. In a display of ignorant cost cutting, Carb counts for grains such as rice are given per cup of RAW not cooked product - same for macaroni whereas the 4th edition gives raw and cooked values. This alone makes it not worth the money but scattered throughout are foods that were there for 4th edition but are now gone.

The publisher probably saved money by eliminating pages but I can no longer recommend this book to friends; I advise them to not buy it but get a copy of the 4th edition instead.

Getting used to it

I purchased the Nutrition Almanac, 2007 edition from Amazon.com. I bought a copy of the Nutrition Almanac over 30 years ago (1979 edition). I used it religiously over the last 30 years. It became so tattered that I finally bought a new one this year (2007 edition). Although the newer edition does have updated information in it, I am going to have to get used to the new layout. The older version was in a more bulleted type of paragraph format, making it easier to find relavent information, such as benefits of a nutrient, toxicity, and sources of the nutrient. The lump paragraph format makes it hard to find what I need. I am going to use a yellow highlighter to bold the food sources of the nutrients. What I do like much better, and the reason I rate the new version a 4-star, is that the nutrient listings for the various foods in the back of the book are much easier to read vertically, instead of horizontally like in the older version. The new Nutrition Almanac, with its bright colorful cover, looks much better than my old, tattered one. After I get used to the new format, I will probably love it as much as my old Almanac.

YOUR BEST FOOD FRIEND

I have had my Nutrition Almanac for over thirty years. This updated book gives you just about all you need to plan nutritious meals that help keep the whole family healthy and also address certain ill-health manifestations. The information is brief but very informative, and the food vitamin and mineral content indexes are terrific. For example: I know someone with a blood clotting problem in their legs. They are prescribed drugs for blood thinners; and then told if they fall and cut themselves, they might die due to loss of blood. Cauliflower contains a good portion of Vitamin K, the vitamin that assists to stop bleeding. And there is a myriad other references that can help you nutritionally. What I do is check my symptoms on the Internet; and from there chose the supplements and foods that should help me. Of course, I believe in doctors, but if you read the side-affects of almost all drugs, they are bad. So for myself, I have chosen to try and be completely prescription free - who knows, maybe I'm just cheap - but I don't want to open a medicine cabinet full of costly pills that all have bad side-affects. So I refer to my Nutrition Almanac and the Internet and so far so good.

Armed with a reel-to-reel tape deck--and, in 1959, a camera--Lomax documented as best an outsider could the stark and savage conditions of the prison farm, where the black inmates labored "from can't to can't," chopping timber, clearing ground and picking cotton for the state.
They sang as they worked, keeping time with axes or hoes, adapting to their condition the slavery-time hollers that sustained their forebears and creating a new body of American song. Theirs was music, as Lomax wrote, that "testified to the love of truth and beauty which is a universal human trait." Their songs participated in two distinct musical traditions: free world (the blues, hollers, spirituals and other songs they sang outside and, when the situation permitted, sang inside as well) and the work songs, which were specific to the prison situation.
A chilling account of how slavery persisted well into the 20th century in the institutionalized form of the chain gang, Parchman Farm includes two CDs with 44 of Lomax's remastered audio recordings and a book of more than 70 of Lomax's photographs, many published here for the first time.

The folklorist Alan Lomax paid several visits to the Mississippi State Penitentiary, a.k.a. As is typical for Dust-to-Digital releases these days, the two discs of Parchman Farm are packaged in a beautiful hardbound book filled with black-and-white photos shot by Lomax on his final visit. The liner notes are taken from previous issues of the material, though nearly a dozen of the 44 tracks have never been released before. An audio portrait of working on a chain gang is supplemented by a deluxe photo book

I’m always anxious to see what comes from Lance and April Ledbetter who run the independent award-wining label, Dust to Digital. “Eclectic” and “High Quality” are two phrases that I always use when describing their products. They’ve found a way to combine audio CDs with a book publishing business. One example is the joint venture with the Alan Lomax Archive – Parchman Farm: Photographs and Field Recordings 1947-1959 - which documents folklorist Lomax’s field recording visit to the Mississippi State Penitentiary, armed with a reel-to-reel tape recorder to capture the prisoners’’ work songs. 44 or these recordings (12 previously unissued) were remastered and fill two CD inserted in the 124-page hardbound book, filled with 77 photos taken by Lomax on the 1959 trip. There are essays to tell the story and details on the dates of the recordings.

If you want to hear REAL chain gang songs, this package will give you the opportunity. And the deluixe packaging is great!

A MOVING TESTAMENT TO THE HUMAN SPIRIT.

This is another very fine release (along with "Lead Kindly Light") from the Dust To Digital label. In a nutshell--everything is very nicely done--the beautiful, thick, die-cut slipcase, the thick boards used for the covers of the book, the informative and interesting essays, the (mostly) b&w photographs, and the authentic songs with great sound.

Parchman Farm looms large in the blues idiom--both in songs about the prison, and in the several blues artists that served time there. Fans/collectors will recognize a number of these songs through various earlier releases, but never in a package which includes a high quality book filled with (77) period photographs of prisoners going about their daily lives. Plus there are 12 previously unreleased songs from the same sessions John Lomax recorded from 1947-1959 on the Farm.

The combination of songs (including vocals accompanied by axes, hoes, guitar, harmonica, plus solo vocals, and unaccompanied group vocals) and the very atmospheric period photographs opens the door to a way of life of forced labor that has been entrenched in the South for many years. And while the photos are stark reminders of that prison farm life, the songs have a feeling of hope, of eventual salvation, of hopefully better times ahead, and (of course) women and the crimes that put these men on the farm. The rhythms of these songs are used while working outside, in brutal heat with no rest, to keep spirits and the work-pace steady. Plus it kept everyone working at the same pace so that no one would be singled out for a beating. Hearing someone sing over the sound of an axe chopping wood, or a long-handled hoe grubbing through the packed earth of a long furrow is to catch a glimmer into a world none of us will ever experience.

For blues fans who are interested in this type of music (like me), the combination of photos depicting various parts of prison life--working, dancing, visitations, etc. and the work songs--many of them in a call-and-response style while working--is a view of life from a not to distant past in America. Songs like "Rosie", "The Prettiest Train I Ever Saw", "Levee Camp Holler", "Disability Boogie", "Poor Lazarus", and "Up The River" are quite moving in their no-nonsense rhythms and lyrics.

This set would be a fine addition to anyone's library who has an interest in this music and/or Parchman Farm. Much of this music is moving with a strangely disturbing element underneath. This isn't something you'll slip into your player when friends drop by to talk. This is something to listen to as a stark reminder of a brutal life we will never know. And through it all the music is what keeps these men on their paths to "gettin' out". This collection is a part of both American history and the blues music genre.
