MICKEY HUFF is director of Project Censored and serves on the board of the Media Freedom Foundation. He is currently a professor of social science and history at Diablo Valley College in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he is co-chair of the history department. Huff is the co-host, with former Project Censored director Dr. Peter Phillips, of The Project Censored Show, a weekly syndicated public affairs program that originates from KPFA Pacifica Radio in Berkeley, California. ANDY LEE ROTH is the associate director of Project Censored. He earned a PhD in Sociology at the University of California-Los Angeles and a BA in Sociology and Anthropology at Haverford College. The interest distracts him from obsessing over his own sexual impotence and over the "exquisite torture" of salacious phone calls he's been getting from a strange woman. DI Carol Jordan, a mercifully normal person who is Tony's liaison with the force, quickly grasps the profiling approach while keeping her policing instincts. Carol and Tony forge an uneasy relationship; but, as they pursue "the Queer Killer," a cloddish policeman undermines them, a local reporter blows the case to get a byline and the murderer closes in on a new quarry. Just okay.

Maybe the best thing I realized when reading this book is that I like my mystery and police procedural novels to be much more sanitized than this one was. Because of specific mind sets within the police department in the town of Bradfield in northern England, it takes a long time for the connection to be made between three young men being murdered and a serial killer. Assistant Chief Constable John Brandon is in Manchester listening to the rationalization presented by Dr. Tony Hill for how he can help law enforcement in his role as a criminal profiler. The Home Office is setting up a network of forensic psychologists to help police solve crimes involving serial offenders. Just as the conference breaks up Brandon receives word that the fourth young, gay man has been found dead after being horribly tortured. Hill, Brandon and Detective Inspector Carol Jordan assemble a team to begin to understand this murderer and stop the killings.

The novel is written so that the chapters alternate between the point of view of the killer and the official investigation. That would have been interesting except the author went into extensive detail regarding how each of the men was tortured. Ultimately these became much too graphic for me, hence my learning that I need more sanitized descriptions of death. The other characters were interesting, but somehow none of them managed to interest me enough to actually begin to care for them. The novel was written in 1995, and has not held up very well. I enjoy reading novels published years ago, but this one just felt very dated and completely overcome by the advances made in computer and forensic technology. There is the aspect of a struggle between opposing sides within the police force for how the investigation should be handled and the press figures very prominently in the story with policemen providing information to the newspapers which affect the cases.

With a mixture of horrible descriptions of torture, almost constant anti-gay derogatory statements and name calling, a plot twist at the ending which came as no surprise, and not really forming any kind of connection with the principal characters involved I'm afraid this book was just okay. One other difficulty I had was that the author never convinced me that the murdered men were actually gay. That factor needed to be much stronger and crystal clear because it was purported to be the reason behind the killings. This book certainly did not make me want to rush out and buy something else in this series or, as a matter of fact, any novels written by this author. Sadly, not every book you pick up is going to be a favorite and not every author is going to light that spark within you which makes you eager to read more of their work. This was just such a book for me.

Disappointed, not like the first Val McDermid I read

This one was heavy on the grisly descriptions of torture, that I finally had to skip over them. These descriptions seemed unnecessary to that degree. The character development was very poor, they seemed one dimensional and uninteresting. The plot was built strictly on violence and little else. The redeeming feature was the surprise ending.

Get ready! This is a great thriller, not for the faint hearted...

Wow. The Mermaids Singing is the second book by Val McDermid that I read, and iI found as good as the first, if not better. It's not for the faint-hearted. A number of supposedly gay men are tortured and murdered by a serial killer, their bodies left washed and naked in the streets of Bradfield. The whole community is on edge, and the police too, who is using the services of a profiler, Tony Hill. Carol Jordan is an inspector who is taking part in the investigation, and her character adds to the interest of the story. What did I like about this book? First, the characters are real. Second, the plot is very good (You'll get a surprise at the end). Third, the writing flows. Fourth, the murder "weapons" and killings are unusual. Fifth, ditto for the murderer. Read it, you won't be disappointed.

About the Author

Alan Flusser is the author of a number of books about men's style, including Dressing the Man. He is the president of Alan Flusser Designs, a company he founded in 1979. He attracted national attention in 1987 for Michael Douglas's wardrobe in Wall Street, as well as later acclaim for his work on the HBO movie Barbarians at the Gate, the Al Pacino movie Scent of a Woman, and American Psycho starring Christian Bale. In 1988, he was placed as a permanent member on the International Best-Dressed List.

Classic book on timeless men's fashion: perfect graduation gift for young men

This is a great book about achieving a timeless look and acquiring quality apparel. Like most men, I was never taught anything at all about color coordination or how to match patterns, let alone judge the quality of clothing. I just assumed that it was a talent that some people are simply born with. While it might be true that some people are gifted in that regard, it is also a skill that can be both taught and learned.

This book is one of several that I credit for teaching me the basics of dressing well and it has been absolutely indispensable in my professional career. I only wish someone had given it to me as a graduation gift.

My only gripe about this book is that Flusser skimps on some details which are made obvious only by their absence. Flusser specifically writes about the importance of color and finding one's personal colors based on the strength of your natural color (skin tone and hair). Flusser goes on to explain how, in ye olden days, men's magazines often had articles discussing and applying color theory to dress and explanations about how one can match clothing colors to personal color to create a pleasing appearance. And that's it. Although he certainly is aware of different theories of how to do these things, they are conspicuously absent from the book.

That's a major failing that I hope will be corrected in later editions or by other works. That said, this book is a good gateway into the world of men's fashion that will give the reader a solid foundation for assembling a timeless and functional wardrobe with plenty of practical tips for doing so.

30 something young professional; add to your appeal by knowing yourself and showing it

This is my first "fashion" book. I used to think i understood a good fit; when the tailor at Brooks Brothers, Nordstroms, etc.. came out and just measured. WRONG. Thank you Alan Flusser. The Tailor is just the last stop in a chain of events that you didn't know existed.

There is more to a good fit than taking in or letting out. This is what prompted me to finally start making changes in how I purchase my few key suites, jackets, dress pants, and dress shirts. I followed Alan's process for identifying the type of clothing best suited for my face, height, and personal style. There are of course specific terms for all the areas of focus, and you will learn them from this book. However the "coup de grace" is that he has photo's of the same attire on different people, and different attire on the same person. Fashion is a visual game. Just like a great sports announcer who can cater to the veteran player watching or the first time fan, he makes it accessible and understandable while not leaving the better informed bored.

Now the big finish. Ever since I followed some of his advice, I've felt more in comfortable and confident in certain "high expectations" situations. With focus on the big items such as colors and patterns, the small stuff such as the proper reveal at the wrist/cuff under a suit jacket just sets it all off and puts you in another league. People will notice, and they won't know what you did, just that you did it right. Because the answer is no one thing, but all in combination.

Timeless, for reference or a pleasure read

Alan Flusser is a men's fashion genius. Any gentleman who pays attentions to detail in his wardrobe will appreciate this timeless look at men's fashion.

It provides a rich history and thorough discussion of every component of men's fashion: shirt patterns and materials, including seasonal considerations; collar styles; tie patterns/colors and how to best coordinate them; pocket squares; lapel cuts, styles, widths, etc.; the shape of men's jackets; sport coats and blazers; the shape and cut of trousers. It even has a detailed section on shoes.

The book discusses fashion icons of different eras, giving the reader a sense of what makes noticeable and timeless fashion.

I highly recommend this book for actual reference in men's wardrobe decision-making or just perusing with a glass of cognac in front of the fire.

and I can understand why some people were annoyed with the political leaning in the book, but I liked the fact that they took a prominent character and had her deal with a severe issue (Cheryl Blossom's cancer). I hope there will be a book 5 in the works!

Disappointing. Archie, Archie Andrews: Where Are You???

Archie: The Married Life series follows Archie Andrews, America's favorite comic teen, as he learns to become an adult in two alternate worlds. In one, he has married Veronica and struggled to be the son-in-law that Hiram Lodge wants. In the other, he has found happiness with Betty and teaching. As the two parallel universes continue to diverge, their paths take eerily similar courses that are fraught with angst, upheaval and controversy. Marital bliss, secure jobs, reliable friends, life itself: they're all threatened in this newest installment, which collects issues 19-24 of the magazine.

As a lifelong fan, it's hard for me to admit that I'm disappointed with this book. Unfortunately, it's the truth. What began as an interesting concept has deteriorated into a political and social machine, obviously used by the author and publisher to support their personal views on hot topics. I never want my review to deteriorate into a political or moral rant. I'm interested more in the quality of the books I read and the value they impart to my life. This book, however, has met none of those qualifications. I want to read a story about Riverdale's inhabitants that doesn't ignore the problems of adulthood but also doesn't blatantly support controversial issues that truly do not belong in books that are seen as children's / young adult literature. I almost wish I had spent my time reading the old 1960s Archie comics that I've read a hundred times before instead of reading this book.
