Great book!!!!!
By Robert Piper
This guy is absolutely hilarious! According to the forward in the book by one of the leading pioneers of mindfulness named Jon Kabat-Zinn, Meng carry's around a business card that says "The jolly good fellow of Google (which nobody can deny)."

Meng designed a meditation system at Google; to make the practice more accessible to people, he calls it, "Search Inside Yourself" its designed to work on three things.

1. Attention training

2. Self-knowledge and self-mastery

3. Creating useful mental habits.

This books is full of ways to incorporate mindfulness into your life, he explains in-depth how to manage harmful emotions with mindfulness. It also contains a great deal of science backing up all of his claims, not to mention the book contains personal testimonials from other Google employees, about how a mindfulness practice has influence their life.

As he says in the book about creating useful mental habits, " Imagine whenever you meet anybody, your habitual, instinctive first thought is, I wish for this person to be happy. Having such habits changes everything at work, because this sincere goodwill is picked up unconsciously by others." This is one hundred percent possible by incorporating a consistent mediate practice into your life similar to the one laid out in this book.

America is ranked very low in the level of happiness on several recent polls and studies. This is something that bothers me, and I would generally like to see more people partaking in any type of available meditation practice or a practice that is similar to Search Inside Yourself even if they only incorporate five to ten minutes a day. I've been mediating for close to a decade, and I spend four hours a day doing it, because I think it's the most incredible tool for consistent states of happiness.

Meng also explains how emotional intelligence is one of the best predictors of success and fulfillment in life. He outlines several mindfulness strategies in the book to work on your emotional intelligence.

This book is a wonderful introduction to mindfulness, as well as a great book for advanced practitioners.

Great meditation primer for beginners
By Alisa Bowman
I write about and teach meditation. As a result, many people ask me for a good, easy-to-read guides for beginners. I'm happy I stumbled over Search Inside Yourself on a bookstore table because it delivers. The author adapts several standard Buddhist meditations for the work setting. Another reviewer (perhaps also a Dharma teacher) on another site criticized the simplification of the meditations and advice, but I disagree with her. I think this "business-lite," as she called it, is brilliant, and it will help to do what we all want: to spread the message and help ease more suffering for more people. The author does a wonderful job of making these teachings accessible for a specific audience: people who suffer at work. He blends Dharma teachings (never really calling them Dharma, though) with the fields of psychology, specifically emotional intelligence. The book is an easy read and left me with several take-aways, even though I've been meditating for years. This is a business book, but the material could easily be used for any situation that involves dealing with difficult people, including marriage. It's a wonderful resource, one that I highly recommend.

Great no-nonsense explanation of what mindfulness meditation is and why ...
By SamuraiEditor
Great no-nonsense explanation of what mindfulness meditation is and why it actually scientifically works. None of the mystical, hippie, made-up bullcrap. The writing style is down to earth, accessible, and easy. If you're curious about mindfulness meditation, this is a great introduction to the concepts.

It also has plenty of exercises, though I recommend getting a good app to help guide you through it. As a beginner, trying on your own without guidance is difficult and not as effective. The author does have a few guided meditations up on Soundcloud, so those are a good start, but only a few so you'll quickly get tired of them.

The Mongoliad (The Mongoliad Cycle), by Neal Stephenson, Erik Bear, Greg Bear, Joseph Brassey, Nicole Galland, Cooper Moo, Mark Teppo

The first novel to be released in The Foreworld Saga, The Mongoliad: Book One, is an epic-within-an-epic, taking place in 13th century. In it, a small band of warriors and mystics raise their swords to save Europe from a bloodthirsty Mongol invasion. Inspired by their leader (an elder of an order of warrior monks), they embark on a perilous journey and uncover the history of hidden knowledge and conflict among powerful secret societies that had been shaping world events for millennia.

But the saga reaches the modern world via a circuitous route. In the late 19th century, Sir Richard F. Burton, an expert on exotic languages and historical swordsmanship, is approached by a mysterious group of English martial arts aficionados about translating a collection of long-lost manuscripts. Burton dies before his work is finished, and his efforts were thought lost until recently rediscovered by a team of amateur archaeologists in the ruins of a mansion in Trieste, Italy. From this collection of arcana, the incredible tale of The Mongoliad was recreated.

Full of high adventure, unforgettable characters, and unflinching battle scenes, The Mongoliad ignites a dangerous quest where willpower and blades are tested and the scope of world-building is redefined.

A note on this edition: The Mongoliad began as a social media experiment, combining serial story-telling with a unique level of interaction between authors and audience during the creative process. Since its original iteration, The Mongoliad has been restructured, edited, and rewritten under the supervision of its authors to create a more cohesive reading experience and will be published as a trilogy of novels. This edition is the definitive edition and is the authors' preferred text.

Amazon.com Review
A Q&A with Mark Teppo, co-author of The Mongoliad: Book One

Q: How did you get the idea for The Mongoliad?

A: It all started with sword fighting, of course. My co-authors and I are part of a Western martial arts study group that practices in a non-descript loft in Seattle. A lot of the initial impetus for the group came from Neal Stephenson who had realized the sword fighting in his earlier novels was lacking the input from individuals with actual expertise. In the course of learning about the history of Western martial arts, he coaxed a couple other writers into the same circle. From there, the idea of writing a saga about the complex history of Western martial arts was born. Since the idea grew out of a group experience, it seemed best to continue the collaborative aspect of the project, and that was how the core team of Neal, Greg Bear, E.D. deBirmingham, Joseph Brassey, Erik Bear, Cooper Moo, and myself came together.

Q: The Mongoliad trilogy began as an online subscription service. How would you describe this first incarnation of the trilogy?

A: At the time, we were also talking about new ways of interacting with our audience, and an online subscription service seemed like an interesting experiment. The edition that grew out of that experience is best characterized as a serialized work-in-progress. Not only were we conducting an experiment in writing collaboratively, but we were also learning what it was like to interact—in near real-time—with our readers. It was, in many ways, not unlike the manner in which Charles Dickens wrote his own novels. The first iteration of many of his classics were serialized, with Dickens shaping and revisiting his plots based on readers' responses to the episodes. He even started to think of the episodes differently—writing more cliffhangers than one would normally use in a traditional novel format

Q: How is the Mongoliad trilogy different from the serialized version of The Mongoliad?

A: We wrote the serialized narrative in one long rush, constantly shifting stories and plotlines in response to writer availability and to what our audience was talking about. I don't know how well it will read after the fact as I think there was a certain amount of inescapable frisson that went on during that process. But it was a serialized experience and much of that emphasis is a weekly cliffhanger, which doesn't necessarily translate well to three separate volumes.

The trilogy that is being released via 47North is a much more coherent narrative where the emphasis is now on world-building and story-telling. The Mongoliad has a beginning, middle, and end, but it's also the starting point of a huge explosion of stories and characters—in the medieval world and beyond—that is still forthcoming. We know so much more about Foreworld now (the world in which The Mongoliad takes place) that we are able to properly understand these characters' place within the larger narrative that has yet to unfold.

Q: What are the strengths of this book-length version of The Mongoliad?

A: Firstly, each of the three volumes of The Mongoliad have been polished, re-structured, and re-edited into the definitive edition of the narrative. The 47North publication is the authors' preferred text. As we said, throughout the serialization a book is never really done for the writers until they can hold it in their hands. We're old school, that way. It's done when you put it on the shelf.

Secondly, having been the guy who had to take it all apart and put it back together across three volumes, I think it's a much stronger narrative now. There are four story branches that move back and forth across the year 1241, and lining up intersection points between the branches was complicated in a serialized non-linear format. The 47North edition allowed us to build a better pace and structure for the narrative.

For example, the Rome branch, which began immediately in the serial, doesn't begin in the 47North edition until Book Two. Which makes sense in a linear story-telling fashion because the events that occur in Rome take place much later than the initial events in Book One. In the serial, we didn't do it that way—much to our chagrin. But we couldn't do anything to fix that misstep. Until now.

Review

“This off-beat alternate history of Eurasia could be your new obsession.” –i09.com

“This story is pure adventure, with much swordplay and swashbuckling.” –Kirkus Reviews

“A terrifically engaging book that pulled me along at least as quickly as The Hunger Games. Think Lord of the Rings without all that pesky fantasy…Five frighteningly accurate historical sword fights out of five.” –Fanboy Comics

"While there might be some truth to the saying "too many cooks spoil the broth", it doesn't apply to The Mongoliad: Book One. In fact it's a distinct advantage in a book where we see the world through the eyes of such a diverse group of people. Differences in voice make each character a distinct individual while not detracting from the story's coherency or cohesion. The overall narrative actually flows far more smoothly than usual for a book covering as much ground as this one, as events build upon themselves naturally and logically. While there's no indication as to who wrote which parts it ends up being irrelevant. After the first few pages you'll find yourself so wrapped up in the story you'll no longer care who the author is, you'll just want to turn the page to find out what happens next." -Blogcritics

"The Tiger Would Pity the Fawn, The Wolf Would Weap Over It's Lamb Before the Mongol Would Cringe Over The Corpse of a Child"
By Ronin
While there are seven authors, the voice of Neal Stephenson is unmistakeable at times. His narrative is often more along the lines of Cryptonomicon than Snow Crash, which depending on your taste may or may not be to your liking (I definitely preferred the latter to the former). I say this because there is considerable "situational dialog", for lack of a better description, where characters have discussions and the reader is slowly brought up to speed. While I found his presence obvious, there are times when it vanishes so I believe this was a good collaborative effort.

The story begins in 1241. Ogedei has succeed Genghis as Khan of the Mongol Empire and his hordes are ravaging Eastern Europe while the new Khan is seduced into court life and overindulgence. The Mongol horde is loose and ravaging Eastern Europe as the population descends into terror. A band of heroes decide a military victory is impossible and there is only one solution; so they set out on an impossible quest.

One character I found interesting was Istvan, who they refer to as a "Madjar", which I assumed to be a nomadic Magyar since he is a highly skilled horse archer. One reviewer was put off by the suggestion of the Mongols being depicted as too brutal. I disagree. Having read all the English-written historical source material on this subject I personally think not a single fiction author has come close to depicting it.

The Golden Horde which devastated north and west led by Jochi & Batu left very little living in their wake. It was a war of extermination and in 1241, the beginning of The Mongoliad, Batu was about to overtake Vienna. The devastation he left behind tells of mountains of human skulls and remains, a vast desolate wasteland; the results of Nazi style cleansing-efficiency. Consider during Genghis' time his empire contained 110 million people with a global population of 400 million and it is estimated 40 million died as a result of his aggression. Compare that to the 60 million who died in WWII out of a global population of 2.3 billion. I applaud the authors for capturing some of the Mongol brutality.

The Mongoliad is set in exotic locations and no commonality of language, much like a viking adventure, which adds to the authenticity. The book is fairly well researched and the diverse team of authors all lend a quality to this complex tale. The first 50 pages take a while to get going, but once the stage is set the reward is a very unique and original adventure that ultimately spans the centuries as the trilogy progresses. I enjoyed the book immensely and look forward to the next installment, due out September 25. I highly recommend!

Seven authors on a quest for exposition
By W. V. Buckley
Generally I try to avoid books that list a multitude of writers since they often come across as having been edited by committee and you have several voices trying to make their portions of the work stand out rather than a single voice that tries to make the entire book stand out. At least The Mongoliad manages to avoid those particular sins, though it manages to find others that are almost as egregious.

Take, for example, the idea of exposition. It's not one of the seven deadly sins, so it's OK to use it on occasion. It's one thing for an author (or authors, in this case) to drop you in the middle of the action on the opening pages; but to plop you in the middle of the action without even the tiniest hint of whenever and wherever the heck you are only serves to confuse and frustrate readers who aren't scholars of Medieval history and/or never heard of the on-line version of Mongoliad before reading about it in some of the reviews.

Likewise, it was difficult to figure out where the action takes place since there were no modern place names used in the book. I was beginning to think the story took place in some fantasy alternate universe until I figured out that Rus meant Russia. I can't entirely blame the authors for this. Even if it had been published with maps (as apparently the "deluxe" version will be) reading maps on a Kindle is nearly impossible.

There are some interesting passages in The Mongoliad, but they ended up being sandwiched between sections that lean toward the tedious. For example, in one portion of the book there is a description of one-on-one combat between two contestants in the Khan's Circus of Swords. I appreciate the level of realism with which this is depicted, but the battle continues over three friggin' chapters! Since the chapters alternate between those set in the Khan's empire and the travels of the dozen knights and others who are undertaking a quest, so every one of those three chapters has another chapter separating it from its continuation. That brings up another problem with how the book is structured: there's no way to tell whether the alternating chapters are occurring at the same time or if time has elapsed between the chapters.

Frankly, I was beginning to wonder if the book would make better sense if I read all the even-number chapters and then all the odd-numbered chapters ... or maybe even just read chapters at random. There are portions of a good book in The Mongoliad, but they are not well-served by the rigid, back-and-forth structure of the novel.

Disappointing. Expected more
By stonyhill
There is nothing particularly wrong with this book, I guess, but the world is not compelling, the characters are not complex, the fights are not unique, and the relationships are stereotypical. I finished this one, barely, but I doubt I will pick up the sequel, and I've never had that feeling after a book from Stephenson or Bear.

simple examples of C++ programs
By W Boudville
The C++ programs given here explore numerous elementary aspects of the language. Plus, if you are already experienced in another language, you might well just use this book to quickly get the essence of the C++ syntax. While the book of course makes numerous references to "Programming Logic and Design", knowledge of another program (preferably object oriented) means that the concepts are already familiar to you.

The only drawback of the example code and problem sets is that they are perhaps too simple. Nothing really intricate is explored.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

NPR MORNING EDITION BOOK CLUB PICK
NAMED A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR BY: THE WASHINGTON POST, NPR, TIME, THE SEATTLE TIMES, MINNEAPOLIS STAR-TRIBUNE, SLATE, LIBRARY JOURNAL, KIRKUS, AND MANY MORE

“Lauren Groff is a writer of rare gifts, and Fates and Furies is an unabashedly ambitious novel that delivers – with comedy, tragedy, well-deployed erudition and unmistakable glimmers of brilliance throughout.” —The New York Times Book Review (cover review)

“Elaborate, sensual...a writer whose books are too exotic and unusual to be missed."—The New York Times

“Fates and Furies is a clear-the-ground triumph.” —Ron Charles, The Washington Post

From the award-winning, New York Times- bestselling author of The Monsters of Templeton and Arcadia, one of the most anticipated books of the fall: an exhilarating novel about marriage, creativity, art, and perception.

Fates and Furies is a literary masterpiece that defies expectation. A dazzling examination of a marriage, it is also a portrait of creative partnership written by one of the best writers of her generation.

Every story has two sides. Every relationship has two perspectives. And sometimes, it turns out, the key to a great marriage is not its truths but its secrets. At the core of this rich, expansive, layered novel, Lauren Groff presents the story of one such marriage over the course of twenty-four years.

At age twenty-two, Lotto and Mathilde are tall, glamorous, madly in love, and destined for greatness. A decade later, their marriage is still the envy of their friends, but with an electric thrill we understand that things are even more complicated and remarkable than they have seemed. With stunning revelations and multiple threads, and in prose that is vibrantly alive and original, Groff delivers a deeply satisfying novel about love, art, creativity, and power that is unlike anything that has come before it. Profound, surprising, propulsive, and emotionally riveting, it stirs both the mind and the heart.

Amazon.com Review

Picked by the Amazon editors as the #1 book of 2015: Many a therapist will tell you that honesty and transparency is the glue that keeps a relationship together. Lauren Groff cleverly turns this concept on its head in Fates and Furies, demonstrating that sometimes it’s what you don’t say—to protect your partner’s vanity, their reputation, their heart—that makes a marriage hum. (Until it doesn’t.) Broken up into two parts and numerous perspectives, this dazzlingly told tale of one such marriage introduces us to Lotto and Mathilde. The former is an out-of-work actor-turned successful playwright, although some of that success is fueled by forces his ego obscures. And then there’s his adoring and enigmatic wife, Mathilde, who we later find out is a far better actor than Lotto ever was. For all the smoke and mirrors, Groff crafts a convincing love story that packs an emotional punch, especially when certain truths are revealed. There is also something satisfying in finding out the extent to which our own perceptions are skewed as the narrative unfolds. The title Fates and Furies is a nod to Greek Tragedy, and this novel revels in the themes befitting one—passion, betrayal, vengeance, redemption…You will revel in it, too. –Erin Kodicek

Review
“Lauren Groff is a writer of rare gifts, and Fates and Furies is an unabashedly ambitious novel that delivers – with comedy, tragedy, well-deployed erudition and unmistakable glimmers of brilliance throughout.” —The New York Times Book Review (cover review)

“One of the pleasures of reading Ms. Groff is her sheer unpredictability: She can inject her narrator’s voice at any time, turn a sentence into a small hurricane.” —The New York Times

“Even from her impossibly high starting point, Lauren Groff just keeps getting better and better. Fates and Furies is a clear-the-ground triumph.” —Ron Charles, The Washington Post

“Thrillingly good—precise, lyrical, rich, both worldly and epically transfiguring… Groff is an original writer, whose books are daringly nonconformist… The prose is not only beautiful and vigorously alert; it insists on its own heroic registration, and lifts this story of a modern marriage out of the mundane.” —James Wood, The New Yorker

“Lauren Groff rips at the seams of an outwardly perfect marriage in her enchanting novel Fates and Furies.” —Vanity Fair

“[Fates and Furies] is a stunning 360-degree view of a complex relationship… There’s almost nothing that [Groff is] not interested in and her skill set is breathtaking…It’s an incredibly ambitious work, she writes like her hands are on fire.” —Richard Russo, NPR's Morning Edition

“We can’t help but be fascinated by the possibility of what goes on behind closed doors—especially if there’s a glam, madly-in-love couple on the other side. Meet Mathilde and Lotto. Groff’s novel unfolds in a he said/she said gutting drama that you won’t be able to resist.” – Marie Claire

“Sentence by sentence, this novel, like [Groff’s] others, is a thoroughbred. Measured by its narrative tricks, however, it is a Trojan horse. Groff’s story of a marriage in which neither partner truly understands the other uses a sophisticated technique to tell its simple story, subverting our expectations with a two-voice counterpoint as meaningful as it is dazzling.” —TIME

“[This] story is a storm you hope won’t blow over: surprising, wild, with pockets of calm that build anticipation for the next squall… Groff scours her characters, laying them bare so questions of likability are moot. If, in the end, everyone is flawed, everyone also attains a kind of nobility.” —O, The Oprah Magazine

“The book is a master class in best lines…It's that good. That beautiful. Occasionally, that stunning.” —NPR.org

“The Florida author’s third novel is billed as her most ambitious yet, filled with sex, rage and revenge.” —The Wall Street Journal

“Audacious and gorgeous …. The result is not only deliciously voyeuristic but also wise on the simultaneous comforts and indignities of romantic partnership.” —LA Times

“[A] rich, tricky novel… Groff is a fantastically vivid writer… it’s hard to stop reading.” —Entertainment Weekly

“A recounting of a 25-year marriage looks way different when told from both sides of the bed.” —Cosmopolitan

“A playful and riveting read that questions whether love can be true when it’s wrapped in falsehoods.” —People

“Renders majestic even the most familiar moments of everyday life… Groff’s writing is striking and revelatory.” —USA Today

“[Groff has the] ability to write dazzlingly about sexual matters." —Vogue

“A delirious, exhilarating and heartbreaking ride through the decades of one fable-like marriage ... The author demands the reader to participate, to engage deeply in order to take in all of the mysteries, flaws and triumphs of this one relationship. Read it, relish it and be sad when the ride is over.” —San Francisco Chronicle

“Groff breaks the novel form open at the seams… What's different and remarkable about Groff's third novel can be summarized in two little words: the writing. Groff is a prose virtuoso, and in Fates and Furies she offers up her writerly gifts in all their glory.” —The Chicago Tribune

“Groff’s command of allusions, imagery, and the puzzle pieces of her characters and plot thrill. So do her words, phrases, and sentences, which bubble up like poetry.” —The Boston Globe

“[Fates and Furies] is capacious, messy, and bold… Groff’s hard, realist vision of marriage — not the fairy-tale voices of the fates that embroider it — gives her novel its considerable force.” —LA Review of Books

“Groff’s novel keenly probes the different ways that men’s and women’s creativity and human value are assessed.” —The Guardian

“Watching a relationship from its inception to its quiet demise is a perverse pleasure… . Lifting the curtain on the front of a perfect marriage and finding a messy pile of emotions heaped on infidelities is strangely satisfying; reading about the nasty bits in prose as elegant and cutting as Groff’s is icing on the cake.” —Gawker

“Groff’s boldness pays off... the title evokes images of Greek mythology in all its vicious glory as Groff examines a marriage by dosing it with epic overtones and filling it with the sort of themes the gods themselves would appreciate: jealousy; betrayal; art; death; love; revenge.” —Miami Herald

“For all the homage Groff pays to the comforting rituals comprising a marriage, her novel is also attuned to how little we'll ever know, even of those we know best. Fates and Furies will induce such reflection. Involving the bed you've made. The loved ones you've made it with. And whether you're living your life there or just sleeping it away.” —Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

“Fates and Furies is wholly complex, dramatic, and riveting – an exploration of love, betrayal, perception, and the destructive power of secrets. Groff’s novel’s crackling energy makes it the perfect read for fall.” —Buzzfeed

“Each page contains sumptuous pieces of imagery.... Fates and Furies, too, begins as a fist, its secrets clenched in its grasp. Once it is pried open, the secrets release like a magician’s doves.” —Electric Literature

“With Fates and Furies Lauren Groff goes many levels below the surface of a marriage, into a place that is perhaps as hard to reach as it is to describe, but Groff, a bold and marvelous writer, is able to do both.  Because she's so vitally talented line for line and passage for passage, and because her ideas about the ways in which two people can live together and live inside each other, or fall away from each other, or betray each other, feel foundationally sound and true, Fates and Furies becomes a book to submit to, and be knocked out by, as I certainly was.” —Meg Wolitzer, New York Times-bestselling author of The Interestings

“Fates and Furies is a dazzling novel, its people and its prose wondrously alive from page one. At once intimate and sweeping, this is the story of a marriage as parallel myths— flaring with passion and betrayal, with redemption and retribution, with the sort of heart-breaking, head-slapping secrets that make you want to seek out someone else who's read it. Lauren Groff is a powerful and graceful writer, one of the best of her generation.” —Jess Walter, New York Times-bestselling author of Beautiful Ruins

This book may be or may not be your kind of thing...
By The Bookend Family
Review by: Stacy Palm
*** 3 out of 5 stars
Release Date: 9/15/2015

First, let me clarify that my 3 star rating is a neutral rating. This is a very difficult book for me to review. I'll start with what I believe is the premise. This is a book about marriage, and about individual perspectives on the same situation. It's a book that brings to light that every person experiencing a situation, even if the situation seems mundane, brings with them their own prior knowledge, and their own view hinged upon all the information that they know that others may not. It is also a book about compromise and what that compromise is worth to a person.

The reasons I enjoyed this novel and would recommend it. The character development is astounding, after reading this novel I know these characters, inside and out. Honestly, this book is relying heavily on the fact that the characters are the driving factor for you to turn the page because there isn't much else there. So they are lively, vivid, characters. These characters do seem to propel the story along so that you feel lost in their world. The beginning and younger years were by far my favorite chapters of the book.
The reasons I didn't enjoy this novel. It is not a light read. It is a heavy, dense read, and often times over pretentious (a whole glimpse into a pseudo play-opera based on Antigone) that brought the whole flow of the book to a grinding halt. Simply because I found myself having to go back and re-read the zealously laden series of complex metaphors, but some readers live for that kind of thing, and if you're one of them, you will love this book. I personally found it a bit much and would have preferred Ms. Groff sacrifice the literature for a better tempo to the story, but that is just my opinion.

Overall, this is where it becomes very difficult to review. I see what this book had to offer. I see the intention and I see the reasons for the delivery. However, when I ask myself the question, "Did reading this book have an effect on me and if so what was it?" To be truthful, I honestly can't answer this question. I don't know that it had any effect on me. I contemplated some things that were factors in the book, but I don't know if that was because of the reading or from knowing that I had a review to write. I also think I would have a difficult time recommending this book to anyone unless I knew exactly what type of reader they were. All these reasons are why I've given the book a neutral rating. This may be the book you are looking for, I may have not connected appropriately with the events, so this may be a book you have to try for yourself.

Groff relies on Hollywood style plot twists that cast characters as either good or evil
By Rebekah
If you want to read a book about privileged white people who attended ivy league schools and who have tons of time to drink and have porn quality sex, then dive right in. If you want a book about a real marriage between real people with real problems, then look elsewhere.

I found this book utterly pretentious. Lauren Groff wants us to know on every page--in every sentence, for God's sake--how very, very clever she is. Her writing stands in the way of the reader actually absorbing a story. For example, her characters are named Lancelot (Lotto) and Mathilde, and their dog is named God. So every time you read about them, in the phrase, for example, "God screamed", the narrative dream is broken and you are left wondering if you should make more of what you are reading than you are. Furthermore, there is nothing about the characters that inspires you to care about them. The choice to read to the end is compelled by the hope that something will happen that will make you finally care--make the laborious effort of reading through Lotto's pretentious plays worth it. Nothing ever does. Groff relies on Hollywood style plot twists that cast characters as either good or evil; doing things that are much more common in movies than in real life. There is nothing in these characters that a real person can relate to.

I read this because it was chosen for the Morning Edition book group. I'm sorry I did.

Marriage Dissected or Who is this Person Sleeping Next to Me?
By SassyPants
Some reviewers are questioning why this book topped so many lists in 2015. I think one of its strengths lies in the diversity of opinion and feeling that it evokes. I found my own reactions changing as the book progressed. I can also imagine rereading it in a few years and having a different reaction or new insights. This book made me stop and think a lot about marriage, who we pick, or who picks us, and why. What secrets do we keep and what do we share? Do you ever really know another person? Do you love your partner for who they are or for who you think they are? Do you love them because of how much they love you or because they see you as you want to be? This is not a romantic love story!

This is the story of Lotto and Mathilde, who meet at the end of their senior year at college and marry quickly. Both have been abandoned by their families due to their bad behavior. Both are charismatic and brilliant. Lotto is a wannabe actor who finds great success as a play-write. Mathilde is the woman behind the man. Or the power behind the throne. The story is told in two parts. "The Fates" is told from Lotto's perspective and "The Furies" is told from Mathilde's. The Furies is definitely the better half of the book. The storyline really moves along and Mathilde is the more interesting character. Her section also has more big reveals.

I loved that husband and wife had such different takes on the same events, even the mundane ones. Neither character is likable. I would not want them as friends. I have stopped reading other books when I strongly dislike the characters. While I did not care about these two, I did want to know how things turned out. Even though at times I was hoping someone would get hit by a bus! To me, Lotto is a narcissist and Mathilde is a sociopath. But they are written with much more nuanced complexity.

I agree with some other reviewers that the writing was a little heavy-handed. The number of literary references seemed like showing off at times. The number of parenthetical observations and asides were excessive (really excessive!) Overall, the book was well written and a well done psychological examination of a marriage. I would highly recommend this.
