About the Author

Narbik Kocharians, CCIE No. 12410 (Routing and Switching, Security, SP), is a Triple CCIE with more than 32 years of experience in the IT industry. He has designed, implemented, and supported numerous enterprise networks. Narbik is the president of Micronics Training Inc. (www.micronicstraining.com), where he teaches CCIE R&S and SP boot camps.

Peter Palúch, CCIE No. 23527 (Routing and Switching), is an assistant professor, Cisco Networking Academy instructor, and instructor trainer at the Faculty of Management Science and Informatics, University of Zilina, Slovakia. Peter has cooperated in various educational activities in Slovakia and abroad, focusing on networking and Linux-based network server systems. He is also active at the Cisco Support Community, holding the Cisco Designated VIP award in LAN & WAN Routing and Switching areas since the award program inception in 2011. Upon invitation by Cisco in 2012, Peter joined two Job Task Analysis groups that assisted defining the upcoming CCIE R&S and CCNP R&S certification exam topics. Peter holds an M.Sc. degree in Applied Informatics and a doctoral degree in the area of VoIP quality degradation factors. Together with his students, Peter has started the project of implementing the EIGRP routing protocol into the Quagga open-source routing software suite, and has been driving the effort since its inception in 2013.

v4.0.1 OCG? - Not Quite

*** Note - the following paragraph was written after reading only the first 7 chapters of the book and may have been a little harsh ***

I have to agree with the first reviewer. I will not be terribly thorough in my review as I've only skimmed through the first 6-7 chapters and found some somewhat alarming similarities to this book and the v4.0 OCG. The CCIE v5 blueprint has removed items such as RITE and RMON altogether but they are copied and pasted from Wendell Odom's book as if they are still testable topics. It is disappointing to see this book's content rushed through like this with little regard for matching contents of this "Certification Guide" to the blueprint that Cisco has made so public. I will modify my review after reading the whole book if I found it had value on it's own merit rather than the words blindly taken from previous authors. There are even portion of the text that were taken from v4.0 that are now incorrect such as the IPv4 Header reference diagram at the end of Chapter 4. It was noted fine in v4.0, why the change? The one positive note is that most of the changes from the errata for the final edition of the v4.0 OCG have been incorporated from what I have found so far in the this text. Wanted to end on a somewhat positive note.

The first chapters still leave something to be desired in my opinion but the chapters covering new IOS 15 configuration and feature sets of the routing protocols that are on the blueprint are a great resource. There are some section where the authors make references as though a diagram is present that lead me to draw my own but that is a trifling matter; the content appears to be great for those sections. I will update again with another star or 2 if this is the level of content throughout the remainder of the book.

*** Update 27 Sept 14 ***
Having finished the first read-through of the text, I have amended my rating to reflect my overall thoughts on the book. I feel that the high cost of the book is not warranted as much of it was already written in previous versions of the book without rewording of any sort. The remaining chapters do have some great content and the new material was covered well in my non-expert opinion. I feel that a candidate will get as much reading the titles in the "Recommended Reading" section at the end of each chapter than buying this book, incurring extra cost. If this book were more reasonably priced in the price range of an addendum to the previous version then my rating would increase 1-2 more stars as the material is as great as when Wendell first penned it. My only frustration with the material itself was already stated, pointing to those sections that are no longer testable for either the Written or Lab portion of the test yet still included in this version of the text.

Now onto more reading and lab work. Good luck to all who read this as I'm sure persons interested in this text are the same ones who are also pursuing this certification.

Great book for CCIE R&S v5 students

I am still at the EIGRP chapter and I do not agree with other reviewers that state that this book is simply a rushed text edited from the v4 book.

The EIGRP chapter is completely different (not to mention updated to named-mode/wide-metrics) and if you compare the depth of the explanations you will notice that it is much different in goals. The old book focuses on a quick topic review, this book focuses on specific points the authors believe a CCIE candidate must master.

No CCIE candidate is expected to read a couple books and be ready to get his/her digits. This is a book well worthy a reading to complement other sources. You will see insights from the authors so well explained it will feel you are sitting a bootcamp in front of them.

I think it's been fantastic so far

I'm not sure where the negativity is coming from in the reviews on this book. I think it's been fantastic so far, I'm roughly 3 chapters in. The CCIE exam has changed, however the topics covered in this volume (STP, OSPF, ISIS, TCP/IP, RIP, etc) haven't changed in 10+ years for the most part. There is nothing that can be said in this book that hasn't been said in countless others, which we've probably all read. If that's the case, then skip it. However if I'm going to invest the time in reading 800 pages for an exam that I'm probably going to fail 5 times, I'm going to spend the $65 and get the most current version of the book. Plus, even reading the same material but worded and presented in a different way is proven to help retention. Volume 2 is where the "new" material is going to be, and by new I mean the CCIE v5 exam topics that haven't been published in an official study guide or foundation learning guide textbook. Personally, I think of this as a refresher and an introduction to Narbik's writing style in preparation for volume 2. I consider this a must-have for anybody getting serious about taking the CCIE v5 written their first time around.

The best text available for airline economics -- Period.

Superb! This text clearly explains the complex economic issues surrounding airlines today, including social and political perspectives. By far the best available resource for potential (or current) airline managers to help understand the driving forces in today's global airline industry. Certainly acceptable for any level of higher academic study, the text looks at economic paradigms driving the industry and provides a fresh perspective of the perils facing airilnes in the 21st century.

Academically Rigorous, Yet Comprehensible

This is the best introduction to the fundamentals of airline economics that I have ever read. Doganis, an analyst and teacher these days, is able to take all his years in industry (including a stint as CEO of Olympic Airways of Greece) and distill it into a useful text full of real world examples. The third edition is updated to include new developments like Internet ticketing, and was written post-9/11, so that sections dealing with issues such as security are up to date.

The book has complete sections on airline, aircraft, and route planning and forecasting, and related subjects such as yield management, marketing, and charter operations. Of particular note is the chapter on pricing policies and fare structures; it is clear that Doganis completely understands the significance of the low cost carriers and the future of yields throughout the different regions of the world.

I always enjoy reading Doganis, and vastly prefer this updated version of "Flying Off Course" to the pre-9/11 "The Airline Business in the 21st Century" (although I do recommend that book as well.) This is a great book, and should be read and understood by airline managers everywhere. My only caution is that though it is not the most mathematically exhaustive book on the subject, casual readers may not enjoy the book inasmuch as it is quite weighty and the chapter on forecasting demand is fairly mathematically rigorous.

For the die-hard Sandman fan only

If you already have all 4 volumes of The Absolute Sandman, Vol. 1 on your shelf, you'll be pleased to know that this finely-crafted collection, though thinner than any of the Sandman volumes, will look equally pleasing on your shelf. However, if you're not a collector with money to burn, you should think carefully. This is a very expensive comic book, and disappointingly short on content.

There are two issues of The Sandman in here (#8 and #20), a handful of short pieces (only one of which, "Death and Venice," memorable for me), and a hundred pages of miscellany (sketches, promotional pieces, a curious pamphlet about AIDS called "Death Talks About Life"). All of this felt like fluff to me. The meat of the volume is two 3-part stories: "The High Cost of Living" and "The Time of Your Life." I was indifferent to the latter, but "The High Cost of Living" is a very solid short story in the classic Neil Gaiman tradition. Fortunately, it's available in a much cheaper volume: Death: The High Cost of Living

If you're on a budget, you can live without Absolute Death.

Yes, this book is a bit overpriced if you pay full list price. However, like the other volumes in DC's "Absolute" series, it is very high quality. Since the two Death miniseries ("The High Cost of Living" and "The Time of Your Life") were only three issues apiece, some padding was needed to make this into an Absolute. It was originally to be called "The Compleat Death", but it was later changed into an Absolute, perhaps so it would match the Absolute Sandman volumes on the shelf (which it does). Note that if you have Absolute Sandman Vol. 1, two stories in that volume also appear here (#8 and #20), along with the Death story from the "Endless Nights" graphic novel, a few short vignettes, the Death Talks About Sex PSA pamphlet, the Death Gallery (which benefits the most from the larger format), a merchandise gallery and Neil Gaiman's complete script for Sandman #8 (with the original pencils). "The High Cost of Living" (which has been relettered for this edition) is the highlight of this book; it is here that penciler Chris Bachalo created the version of the character that would become most familiar to comics fans for the next decade. The original printing of Death: The High Cost of Living #1 erroneously split up a 2-page sequence (the left half of a splash page appeared on the right, and you had to turn the page to see the right side of the picture). No such problems here. This is the definitive Death collection. It is probably not worth $100, but if you buy it with a discount from Amazon or otherwise can pick it up as a discount, it may be worth it. Note: I don't think anything has been recolored, with the exception of Sandman #8 (which was also in Absolute Sandman Vol. 1).

worth every penny

So I won't waste time recapping what is in this collection.. the other reviewers cover it pretty well. However, I will call attention to 1) the astounding beauty that the larger Absolute format brings to the work, 2) the complete-ness you feel in this collection (its got all the major Death in it - if you were a Death-goth kid you may not have wanted to buy Absolute Sand 1 just for the 2 Death issues, so they are included here - I see that as very reader-friendly of DC), 3) how great it is in connection with the 4 Sandman collections - amazingly amazing. Gaiman is an incarnation in his own right, and 4) how much I love DC for including the Death / AIDS pamphlet. It is surprisingly hard to find, and yet of great interest as an historical comic artifact and something that is still relevant to this day - using comics as education never gets old, especially when it promotes understanding and tolerance. If you're a Gaiman fan, a Death fan, a Sandman fan, or all of the above, buy this - just don't pay full price (it's worth it, but save yourself some dough, eh!)

Awesome follow up to "American Goddesses."

Trish and Megan are settled in their relationships and lives and accustomed to their powers. Megan is called upon to ease a truck out of the mud and the Helpful Ladies pitch in by popping in and via their psychic network. Henry’s rich tapestry of Helpful Ladies from around the world gives a wider scope to this story to the overall character landscape. Where there is one Melinkova, a logical reader knows there will be more. In the immediate view of Trish and Megan is the coming of age of their own daughters. This natural progression is especially poignant for Trish who has feared the moment from the time her young daughter, Tammy, looked up into a tree only to find herself at the top of it before falling to earth. In a very human moment, we go with Megan and Trish as they introduce Megan’s daughter, Emma, to flying and also to the very real responsibility she faces as a Helpful Lady.

Melinkova is especially interesting. She awakes in the future to find herself in someone else’s body and bad situation and in complete control. She’s baffled by progress but what we know about her is that she is a truly damaged person who wants to control something. Melinkova also desperately wants a connection and it is in the connection with Rhonda Sue Skinner that we see Melinkova’s truest self. Rhonda Sue Skinner is also something of a masterpiece of a unique character. I’d like to say that we meet her at a low point but her life seems to be a constant low point. Her brother dies in prison, her ex-boyfriend comes into the bar with the woman that perhaps overlapped their relationship. That’s just the start of Rhonda Sue’s country song of bad luck. Rhonda is a character who clearly never helps herself and is sad yet fascinating to read.

Henry gives us time to savor with the women we know from the first novel while pushing an action packed storyline that I simply did not want to put down. I want more. “Rogue Goddesses” is a wonderfully thrilling story. “Rogue Goddesses” is a 15 star out of five stars read. If you like this sort of novel but haven’t read the first, the latter novel stands easily on its own. Pick both up today and plan a relaxing evening of holiday awesomeness.

Goddesses Reign!

I read American Goddesses in 2013 and fell in love with the storyline. It had me so entranced. The ability of the writer to be so intricate in his characters, his plots, his fortitude to make the characters into true beings in the novel. After a few months, I knew he was writing a sequel to the amazing American Goddesses, and I anticipated it for what felt like forever! I have read ROGUE GODDESSES, American Goddesses, Book 2, more than once and I can state clearly, I'll be reading it again!
Rogue Goddesses takes you beyond the unbelievable and makes you believe the story. Makes me wonder how our world would be with the Goddesses in charge! From beginning to end, I allowed myself to dive deeply into the characters and follow them on a journey I could not imagine in my own mind! Gary Henry didn't miss a thing in this sequel by thoroughly defining each character and making sure you didn't know what was going to happen next! Speaking of characters, you might find a bit of myself within the story lines as well!
I advise everyone to read American Goddesses first to truly enjoy this sequel, but whether you have or not, Rogue Goddesses will have you ready to go back & read American Goddesses, then read Rogue Goddesses again! The details of the events in the story bring it to life. I felt the heartaches of the characters. The evilness of other characters. I visited places in my mind that were so real because Henry detailed places and characters to perfection. Written so well defined, it all ends up to be one spectacular novel series!
I tend to tell too much about a book, so I'm not going to spoil this one for anyone! I will end in saying this.....Once in a while, one has an opportunity to marvel at someone's work which is so very well written you cannot wait to read their next work!
Thank you Gary for a read that will be one of my all time greats!

The Goddesses Are Back!

The beauty of Rogue Goddesses by Gary Henry is that it works both as a standalone novel or a fitting sequel to the wonderfully entertaining American Goddesses. Henry cleverly uses a prologue to introduce new readers whilst reminding returnees of the backdrop to the story.
In a nutshell, the world is being policed by the women who developed Goddess powers in the original story. The years have rolled on to 2030 when 11,000 telepathically connected women, known as the “helpful ladies”, are fighting crime and keeping the world safe.
All of our favourite characters from American Goddesses are still here but they play a supporting role to the new generation of Goddesses, most notably Tammy, the teenage daughter of Trish and Tom Wilkins.
Henry also reintroduces Melinkova, the rogue Russian Goddess from his original story by allowing her to inhabit the body of a murdered 18 year old prostitute. The incongruity of a hard bitten 48 year old hidden behind a vulnerable appearance makes for every man’s nightmare. In Melinkova, Henry affords us a glimpse of what she might have been had she not been abused by so many men on whom she wreaks a very satisfying revenge. This fracture of personality is even more apparent in his character Rhonda Sue, another rogue Goddess, who we come to view sympathetically despite the carnage she unleashes.
Henry’s skill as a writer is apparent in the assured way he is able to switch between time frames. There is a sub-plot, where Tammy is taken forward to 2630 and shown a vision of a future where the rogue Goddesses have enslaved all of mankind. This is done order to galvanise her into using her fledging powers and is a device that works extremely well, even allowing Henry to have a little fun at the end of the novel.
Rogue Goddesses is set in the future and contains elements of sci-fi. For example, there are nani-phones which allow people to quite literally have all of technology at their fingertips and driverless cars. Henry’s style though is such that he makes these things completely believable within the realms of his story, just as he does with the many powers that the Goddesses enjoy.
Ultimately, Rogue Goddesses is a celebration of women and sisterhood. Henry presents us with the ideal of a supportive and kind, matriarchal society, which is able to triumph despite the threat posed by the somewhat sad rather than bad rogue Goddesses.
I loved this novel, it’s a lot of fun and it makes a refreshing change to read about women who are kicking ass and saving the world.

Timley reprint of an excellent book that is needed by the industry.

This book is well written with great examples and photo's. It is the best manual I have read on towing. If you consider that about 90% of the commercial vessels being operated by US crews are tug boats, there is a need for a solid manual on towing. As I understand it, this book was first published in the 1970's. This is a 2014 update and republish of that material. This book is outstanding if you are looking to serve as an officer or crew on a tug boat. If you are new to tugs, read this book. If you are working your way up the hawse pipe as a deckhand, buy this book and study it. As well, if you can get into Kirby deckhand school go through their deckhand training program.

It's a text book

This isn't a book filled with stories about tows, tugs and the seas. Rather, it is a factual book about the varios kinds of tugs and the different methods of moving barges and ships. It is well written, but for me, it wasn't a page turner.

A deeper look at the psychology of The Walking Dead

I absolutely loved this book. It takes a serious look at the psychological aspects of the show, both why viewers watch and the toll the Zombie Apocalypse (or any other type of apocalypse) takes on survivors and affects their behaviors. Psychology has always been a casual hobby of mine, and I am truly obsessed with the show, so this was right up my alley. The book is a collaborative effort of several Psychology professors and counselors, and they all offer interesting insights on varying aspects of the show.

So why DO we watch? One of the authors posits that it is because we have a longing for a sense of community, deeper relationships, and connections. There are no cell phones or computers in the ZA. No television, no Internet, and none of the constant bombardment of stimuli that we are subjected to on a daily basis. The survivors have to rely on each other for everything and deep relationships are formed. When you place your life into the hands of others on a daily basis, forging such strong bonds is a major contribution to your survival.

There is also a strong sense of nostalgia for things lost. The survivors feel it as they make their way through the wasted land filled only with walkers; something as simple as the ice cubes in Andrea’s glass of lemonade at Woodbury are seen as a long-lost luxury. After Rick and Carl flee the prison and find refuge in an empty home, Carl looks at the video games in a kid’s room and the big screen TV with longing...then rips the cord off of the useless TV to use to secure the front door. The viewers feel it, too. Seeing abandoned homes and signs of the people who lived there, seeing rusted cars grown over with kudzu, seeing a world that has ended for the vast majority of human beings...how can you not feel a sense of longing for what has been lost? The premiere episode of the show is called “Days Gone Bye” for a good reason.

Another author believes that part of the show’s appeal to so many of us is that it causes us to reflect on existential questions such as the meaning of our lives and to what purpose we would continue in such a scenario. It may cause us to confront our fears and think about how we would react in the ZA. Would we retain our humanity? Would we grow hungry with power like the Governor, or would we do whatever it takes to protect our family, like Rick is trying (and not always succeeding) to do? The author draws an analogy between survival in the ZA and survival in the death camps of the Holocaust. It’s not a bad analogy because surviving both would take courage and the ability to confront the worst that humanity has to offer. How can anyone deal with such inhumanity (in the ZA, both from the walkers and from certain other survivors) and come through unscathed? It’s natural to question our own abilities to deal with such extreme circumstances.

As for the survivors’ response, they are all suffering in varying degrees from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. They have all seen and done some incredibly horrible and brutal things and are under constant stress and constant fear. All of this can result in unpredictable behavior and bad decision-making, both of which can cost you your life or the lives of those who are looking to you for protection, resulting in further stress and survivor’s guilt. Many of the survivors have experienced psychotic breaks, such as Morgan after losing his son Duane, or Rick after Lori died. Michonne spent months by herself, talking to her dead boyfriend as if he were there. One of the big questions in the series has been, “Do you get to come back?” In other words, after all you’ve seen and done, do you get to survive with your humanity intact? It’s a question that is still being answered for many of our survivors.

The most interesting chapter to me was the one that considered Daryl Dixon’s transformation from angry redneck to reliable soldier, and even to transformative hero. The author looks at Daryl in the context of Joseph Campbell’s ‘hero arc,’ in which the character embarks on a journey of self-discovery. Daryl is compared to the classical hero Ulysses, who experiences hardships and tests in his travels and learns much about himself in the process. Daryl was an abused child, growing up in sad circumstances; he looks for Sophia with such dedication because he thinks about how he wished he could have been saved when he was a child. It has taken the ZA to make Daryl realize his potential as a human being with meaning to his life, and a valuable, trusted member of the group. As such, Daryl is a symbol of much-needed hope in the apocalyptic world. If Daryl can overcome what he did and grow into a position of trust and leadership, then there is hope for all of us. Daryl sets the bar high and challenges us to become our own “better angels.”

The book also does a few case studies of some of the characters to see if they fit the profile of a psychopath. Shane, the Governor, the Claimers, Negan, and others are examined using professional criteria.

The book concludes with the thought that zombies help us confront one of our biggest fears: our own mortality. We see that the zombies are simply bags of meat, without purpose or meaning other than finding their next meal (and hopefully it’s not us). We all have a desire to find meaning in our lives, to be more than another bag of meat. The book feels that The Walking Dead succeeds in showing the human struggle to find meaning in life, even knowing that our mortality is inevitable, and that our struggle matters.

So why do I love the show so much? Because it makes me think about all these things. Yes, you can say that it is “just a TV show,” but I’ve always felt that good TV can speak to us on a level that makes us address certain things in ourselves and also connects us with others who feel the same way. The best shows make you wonder how you would react in certain situations, whether it’s Walter White confronting a cancer diagnosis or Don Draper dealing with his past and the rapidly changing world around him. The Walking Dead makes us wonder what we would do in order to survive...or would we even want to? And why?

Highly recommended for anyone who is a fan of the show, comics, or novels.

A great book for the living and the dead!

I just finished my advance reading copy and I loved it! I'm a lifelong horror movie fan and The Walking Dead Psychology really opened my eyes as to why concepts like zombies are so darned appealing. With an insightful foreword by Night of the Living Dead co-creator John Russo and a series of fascinating chapters (by several different contributors and edited by Dr. Travis Langley) that cover virtually every psychological and sociological aspect of the zombie apocalypse, as portrayed on TWD, this book really keeps you engaged and thinking - a must read for TWD fans and zombie generalists alike!

A great find for the other kind of Dead-heads

"The Walking Dead Psychology" is for those who aren't satisfied with just The Story, but want to understand the deeper motivations and mechanisms at play in the characters. The show is so emotionally raw that its hard not to project one's self into it, wondering "How could I weather *that*??" This book will give you solid academic answers, neatly meshed with the television and comic book versions proper. Its not a dry textbook, but a labor of love. Keep your Anti-Zombie Bat-Spray handy, because the technical explanations come shoulder-to-shoulder with juicy, wrenching references to story events.

The show has wryly been called "misery porn," as no one really escapes in the end, yet the struggle is clearly mesmerizing. Too much so-called realism has permeated our popular lore until it sometimes undermines the relief or uplift we seek. However, the better zombie offerings are all *about* surrogate family and perseverance under hard conditions. There is more tension than release, but that makes it sweeter when it arises. There's something arresting about the show quote "You feel safe enough to be bored? You're lucky." Part of testing ourselves with fictional zombies involves a sideways inoculation against the real ones in politics, on the job or at Wal-mart. The show displays the paintings in the narrative house; this book shows you the internal wiring of the Why and How.

Shooting a zombie in the head is easy; coping with the apocalypse in your own head as you navigate such a mess, much less so. This is almost a missing link in any WD library, or any zombie collection. Where the absorbing "World War Z" is built from individual, subjective testaments, "The Walking Dead Psychology" describes the intersection between the clinical and the human. Its a satisfying read.
