Excellent history, underwhelming recipes/branding.

This book has some positive things going for it, from a very interesting and thorough history of vermouth to a beautiful layout and gorgeous photography. It's very nice to see this ingredient mulled over in-depth, and there are some very intriguing facts about the decline of vermouth in the US following WWII that I have not seen discussed elsewhere.

That being said, I am fairly disappointed with the blatant branding and focus on NY regional products that runs throughout the second half of the book. I get it, the author invested his time and energy into the Atsby vermouth line and loves the NY area, but this reads more like a list of sponsored recipes for his company/colleagues that you would find in promotional PR material or a paid ad than an honest look at the broad spectrum of vermouth cocktails. That's not to say that they have no place in a cocktail book, especially since the Atsby products are not necessarily interchangeable with other styles, but the sheer amount of times they are called for is overwhelming.

Overall, I'd rate this purchase as 2.5 stars. It is a mixed bag that has some great highlights, but I feel is ultimately a missed opportunity when it comes to providing an impartial take on vermouth, and I probably would not purchase it again.

Perfect for Boozehounds and History Buffs alike!

Adam Ford has crafted a solidly informative, interesting, and entertaining look into the history of a beverage much maligned in recent cocktail culture. From the book's very introduction, Ford puts the reader at ease and lets everyone know--loud and clear--that although vermouth may have a reputation as your grandmother's drink, sitting under a fine layer of dust in the back of an aging liquor cabinet, the history of the drink is both vibrant, multi-faceted, and will be told by Ford in a way that makes it approachable. I often found myself chuckling at Ford's quips and comments throughout the book. His writing style make it feel like you're sitting next to him at your local watering hole and easily guides the reader through the ancient history, modern American history, and even cocktail recipes in way that is seamless and seemingly effortless. While the read was easy, the information was dense and textured, and structured in a way that build logically and left me both satisfied and thirsty for more after finishing the book. Much like Heather Greene's "Whiskey, Distilled" and Robert Simonsson's history of the Old Fashioned cocktail, Vermouth crafts both a history and a set of approachable modern applications of a drink that takes the reader on an interconnected journey throughout human history as well as through modern culture. I didn't feel as if I only walked away with knowledge of vermouth, but of the cultures within which it has existed for centuries. Also worth mentioning is the absolutely stunning photography peppered throughout-If you doubt the vermouth can be sexy, the visuals alone here will prove you wrong!

Vermouth is perfectly timed to the modern resurgence of vermouth in cocktails around the country and deserves a spot on the bookshelf of any cocktail enthusiast, cultural historian, American history buff, or simply anyone who enjoys a good read over a stiff drink.

the author did a great job of drawing me in to what I previously ...

I initially got the book for a friend of mine who is way into vermouth and books (I’m not), but ended up keeping it for myself. Right from the start, the author did a great job of drawing me in to what I previously thought was a very un-sexy world of vermouth. First, the book is beautiful -- he obviously put a lot of thought and effort into the aesthetics – cover to cover with gorgeous photos throughout. Then he writes so passionately about his journey with vermouth, how he fell in love, and it kind of makes you want to love it too. It may be a little heavy on vermouth history for my taste, but if you’re interested in that sort of thing, he begins with vermouth in China thousands of years ago and brings you up to date. And for the drink lover/vermouth novice like myself, there are a ton of really interesting cocktail recipes that look delicious! I also found out the author created his own brand of vermouth. Now that’s serious! But if he put the same love and care into creating his vermouth as he did with his book about it, it’s probably worth more than a try.

Great Resource for E-Mini Dow Day Trading

This book is a great resource for any serious day trader, who wants to capitalize on the author's vast experience of trading and teaching to trade E-mini Dow. It offers a set of conceptual ideas and psychological tips, instrumental in developing good trading habits and mastering different emotional states while trading in the live market. It also presents in great detail eleven trading methods for structured capturing of continuation, reversal and break-out trades. Finally, four trading programs, outlined in the last chapters, help to apply the book material with concrete financial objectives in mind, and set the stage for making a reasonable profit with the least amount of risk possible. Studying this book and implementing its wisdom in my own trading, has positively affected my bottom line and greatly improved my technical and physiological skills. Two thumbs up!

This is gluten free?

I made the donuts pictured on the cover of this wonderful book and they were delicious. My friend came over with her daughter and she grabbed one and gobbled it up and said it was the best donut that she had ever had. She had no clue that they were gluten free! My teenage GF daughter, who has been craving donuts since going GF one year ago, was so happy! She smiled while she was eating them.

This book is unlike other GF cookbooks. There are weekday timesavers which is what I need during my crazy weeks. I love that I can make yeasted pizza dough (in 3 minutes flat) and put it in the fridge to rise and be enjoyed during the week. Same with the refrigerated bread dough. I no longer have to wait for the rise to get the bread in the oven. I made bread dough on Sunday and I am making parmesan breadsticks with the dough tonight. There are plenty of yeast free breads/pizza recipes as well.

In addition, there are recipes to make your own "boxed cake" mixes ahead of time so all you need to do is grab the wet ingredients and start baking.

Nicole Hunn, through her blog and her cookbooks, is making my life easier (and more delicious) one recipe at a time!

EDITED TO ADD (07 NOV 2012): the parmesan bread sticks were so yummy!!!!!! Because I made the dough the night before, they took me 10 minutes to get in the oven. How cool is THAT??? One note with GF breads fresh out of the oven, you must let them cool first! I ate one right away and it was good, but the one I let cool for 10 mins (still warm) was FANTASTIC!

A Good gluten free cookbook for every day foods--with Update

I really liked Nicole Hunn's first gluten-free cookbook (yep, I wrote a review for that one, too), and when I heard she had another cookbook out, I decided to get it as well.

These cookbooks are written in a very easy to understand manner, with fairly simple directions and lots of information to give you an ideas of why you're doing something, or what's really important. They're easy for the beginner cook or baker, as well as the person who has tried similar recipes with gluten filled foods (that would be me). When I first started out baking gluten free, I had NO IDEA what I was doing with different types of flours and what I needed to do to make some of the foods that I missed. The ingredients needed for these recipes are fairly easy to find--much can be ordered easily online (I order mine from Amazon), or found in most regular grocery stores. The recipes in this cookbook (and the first one) helped me develop some new skills working with gluten-free flours and getting back on the baking path.

There's no need to miss out on your favorite sweets and breads if you're gluten-free--just find a favorite recipe in this book and go from there.

Update, March 2013. I've now had this cookbook for several months and I've had an opportunity to try many things from it. First, the donuts (pictured on the front of the book) are evil in how delicious they are. I made a batch, ate half and took the remaining into work where they were tempted my co-workers to behave like animals in their quest to get to them. (And, no, I do not work in a zoo.) Second, the recipes I've tried are very easy, with good directions. I've even halved some of them and they've turned out well. This book was a good investment and if Ms. Hunn does a "Gluten Free on A Shoestring Recipes Forever" (or any other gluten free recipe book), I'll buy that one, too.

Wonderfuly Surprised

At first glance, I was a bit disappointed to see a bunch of recipes for meals with proteins as their main component. I know how to cook gluten free meat! LOL. But as I continued to look, I found so many exciting recipes I can't wait to try. There is a big section on making your own mixes. This is perfect for my family and we pre-make mixes for our pantry all the time. We were thrilled to see a GF cinnamon roll recipe and tried it out first thing. It did not disappoint. We have also tried the cake mixes and brownies and will shortly be trying them all. I will also be preordering Nicole's new baking book as well as her others. I am very pleased with her books. The recipes are EASY and straightforward. A wonderful surprise!

It's all about the importance of it's content, not how many pages

After finishing this book I can only give it the best compliment, I will read it over again and again. Yes, it's not very long and doesn't technically qualify as a book but it's contents are all that matter. For $10 this is a great investment for your short and long term success. Not many original ideas in here but the way the author has cooked it down to the most important details, I value it's simplicity. How many times have you read books that are 300+ pages and you wonder..."how come it couldn't be more respectful of your time"? This book respects the laws and respects your time to help you change as quickly as possible. I will let the information sink in for a couple of weeks and then I will reread.. I think that is the best compliment I can give the author.

"You 2" For Me

This book is the ultimate book for individuals who value success. Easy reading but it is quite powerful in it's message. "You 2" explains how to make quantum leaps in your personal and proffesional life. This is a must have selection for people who are in sales or self employed.
After reading this book I took a new understanding to the powerful message of getting "uncomfortable" to take things to the next level.

Power packed book

The ideas in this book are absolutely amazing. I read part of it every day. It assists me to stay focused, and remember that I don't have to work all alone - there are "unseen forces" and powers that, if I tap into them, by law will multiply my results 10 fold. I have recommended it to many people, and our mastermind group are all using it.
It is short,easy to read, and packed with fantastic information.
Couple it with the book "The Quantum Leap Strategy", and you really do have a High Velocity Formula. Robyn YF (Aust)
