Greeks in Venice - the Title Says it All

It can be claimed with some confidence that Greek refugees in Italy were responsible for triggering the Renaissance so it is worth investigating who some of these guys were and what they got up to. What Geanakoplos does is explore the lives and careers of five Greek scholars, along with Erasmus. There is an opening section about the Venice and its Greek colonies like Crete (pages 13-70).

The first Greek scholar (or Disseminators as Geanakoplos calls them) is Michael Apostolis (pages 73 - 110). Apostolis was a minor scholar but Geanakoplos includes him as a typical example the first generation of refugee scholars.

Marcus (or Mark) Musurus (pages 111- 166) was from Crete. His is famous for being the Greek teacher of Erasmus and for being an editor for the Aldine Press. Musurus was a skilled linguist and was responsible for editing the Lexicon of Hesychius.

Arsenios Apostolis (pages 167-200) was the son of Michael Apostolis. He comes across as an unlikeable individual, mainly due to his attempt to seize the episcopal throne of Monemvasisa from the Orthodox and to set himself up as a Uniate bishop.

Zacharias Calliergis (pages 201-222) was also from Crete. He set up a Greek printing press in Rome and developed a cursive Greek font.

Demetrius Ducas (pages 223- 255) worked on the Polyglot Bible in Spain as well for the Aldine Press in Venice.

Desiderius Erasmus (pages 256-278) is so well known I am surprised he was included in this book.

I was a bit disappointed that there was no chapter on Bessarion. His role in promoting Greek studies and collecting manuscripts is well known but I don't think there is a suitable account of his scholarly actives in English. Geanakoplos does not really explore the religious side of many of these scholars. In order to function in Italian society they all converted to the Catholic Church. I felt the issue of these converts sincerity (with the exception of Arsenios Apostolic who seems to have been a fanatical Catholic) have been interesting to investigate. Nevertheless, Geanakoplos does a great job at exploring the roles of his subjects. The quotes Geanakoplos makes from the correspondence of his subjects really adds to his biographical surveys.

BRIAN EVENSON is the author of Last Days (formerly titled Brotherhood of Mutilation) and The Open Curtain (Coffee House), which was a finalist for an Edgar Award and an IHG Award and was among Time Out New York's top books of 2006. He lives and works in Providence, Rhode Island, where he directs Brown University's Literary Arts Program. Other books include The Wavering Knife (which won the IHG Award for best story collection) and The Brotherhood of Mutilation. He has translated work by Chrstian Gailly, Jean Frèmon and Jacques Jouet. He has received an O. Henry Prize as well as an NEA fellowship.

A book with pacing issues but a great finale

Dead Space: Catalyst is an excellent book with a really awful opening. The writing isn't bad, don't get me wrong, but it's a bit of a case of the author doing a set up which is far removed from the premise of what the audience came here to enjoy. For those who may be put off by the introduction, I encourage readers to stick with it as you'll be rewarded with plenty of traditional Dead Space fun with Unitologists, Necromorphs, Markers, action, and horror.

The premise of the book is brothers Istavan and Jensi live on one of Earth's many space colonies. Unfortunately, despite being five hundred years in the future, they haven't found a cure for either poverty or mental illness as Istavan suffers from paranoid schizophrenia which goes undiagnosed as well as untreated.

In an introduction which has nothing to do with the Dead Space universe for almost a third of the book, Jensi struggles between his desire to abandon Istavan and his love for him. Eventually, because this is Dead Space and not a drama about a difficult real-life situation, Istavan kills a politician under a belief he's not actually hurting him and is sent off to a prison-planet version of Guantanamo Bay.

It's there the Unitologists, dastardly space-cult they are, are experimenting with the prisoners using yet another artificial marker. Jensi, riddled with guilt for not doing more for his brother, uses every resource he can to track down his brother so he can rescue him. By the time he arrives, though, the Marker has already done its usual thing and it becomes a race to see if he can save his brother (or the world from him).

I give props to the authors for the fact they handled a sensitive subject, mental illness and the challenges it poses, with a deft hand. Unfortunately, it rather throws the pacing off tremendously in the book. There's neither hide nor hair of the Dead Space universe for much of the book and things don't get going until the final third.

I believe video games can and should be able to tackle a wide variety of sensitive subjects but I can't help feel this is a work which would have benefited from reducing the sections devoted to Jensi caring for Istavan to a single chapter. Either that or spread the events of the story through
flashback while keeping us in the middle of Necromorph action.

The treatment of mental illness is handled well with Istavan not being a bad person, merely confused and unable to interact with the world the way other people do. The book doesn't hold onto this view completely as this provides him a minor protection against the Necromorph's Marker's effects but it doesn't turn his disability into a superpower either.

The best part of the book is, for me, the parts which deal with the Necromorphs and their outbreak as well as the thoroughly bleak ending. There's a lot of fun homages to the games spread throughout this and I wish this section had been longer. I would have gladly read a book about a pair of brothers struggling with infirmity as well as a non-stop alien-zombie action adventure but I'm not sure those two things went well together here. Still, I enjoyed 2/3rds of the book very much and loved the ending.

Multi-Genre Horror from known videogame universe

First of all - I am fan of Dead Space, yes. I think that I enjoyed this book more than DS: Martyr. Core characters are two brothers, one of them is kinda autistic which makes him capable/more susceptible to listen to the Marker. There are numerous situations described from two perspectives - how they are perceived by both of them (simply put "crazy vs. normal" although I do not like to use such labeling) - and I think this is what author have done excellently! Those who expect big massacre might be little let-down as more than half of the story does not contain any Necromorphs as it focuses more on the characters' stories. However it is not like nothing happens there and the story tends to escalate eventually very quickly. Actually it is like multi-genre novel, starting with drama, going to crime-fiction, psychological thriller and eventually turning into horror.

Good storytelling, and very different from Martyr.

The author Brian Evenson returns to the Dead Space universe with a stand-alone story that features new characters and new places, while tipping more than a few nods to familiar elements to seasoned DS fans. I'm glad to see he's back. As you'll see below, there are some traits that make it more inaccessible to new readers than its predecessor, but overall I believe Catalyst to still be essential for devoted fans of Dead Space.

Following the paths and perspectives of brothers Jensi and Istvan, with the latter having serious mental disabilities, I must admit that you won't get too deep into actual Dead Space territory until you are a little under halfway through. No joke. You'll only find one or two pages that refers to the Marker (something all too familiar to DS fans) until you reach that point. While this sounds like a serious flaw, I personally enjoyed the great storytelling along the way. The overall cast here is smaller than in Martyr, and I found myself caring much more about the characters than before -- though Michael Altman will never be forgotten in my mind's eye, of course. They have deep personalities, and I was impressed with Evenson's ability to take on such atypical characters. As for the setting, I don't want to give too much away, but I will say you get the feeling of isolation with regards to it that you may have gotten in Martyr. I'm beginning to think this is one of Evenson's writing marks.

Going back to the slower-paced story, once you do hit the halfway point the action and Dead Space references kick in with quite the force. The slow build-up did serve to muster a good bit of dread and stress in me as I knew what would inevitably happen in something involving Dead Space. However, the action was so intense and so fast that the ending felt very rushed, which for me was the biggest disappointment here. I felt characters met their conclusions too hastily without fleshing out their deeper emotions as I had experienced in earlier parts of the book.

Earlier I mentioned inaccessibility, and by that I meant that by itself readers unfamiliar with Dead Space will have so much flying over their heads while reading Catalyst. So many terms from the games/series are thrown out and assumed to be understood by the reader. If you are approaching this as a first-timer to the Dead Space universe, I advise you to read Martyr or play one of the games first.

Some readers are fans solely seeking answers to questions about Dead Space in this book. And I must tell you, there is not much in that department. This story takes place before the first DS game, as Aegis VII is still in-tact, but as far as learning more about the origin of Unitology and/or the Marker that is where Martyr shined in my opinion. This book is just a good standalone story that highlights more at what the second video game hinted at -- a deep and growing conflict between the government and Unitology. Here they appear to be working together, and it seems by the end one can see where that conflict could emerge. Other elements from the DS2 game are apparent here as well, though I don't want to spoil them. To be honest, I think readers will have more questions than answers by the end of the book, but not really about the Marker. On the contrary, more so about the government and Unitology, and something in my gut tells me this is what Visceral is wanting -- more build-up and hype to be relieved by Dead Space 3 in February.

In conclusion, let me simply reiterate. If you are a sci-fi reader with a mild curiosity for DS, please dive in and join us. Just don't start with this book, lest you attempt getting into Game of Thrones by starting with the second book. If, however, you are an avid Dead Space fan that loved Martyr and are more than eager to get your hands on Dead Space 3 as well as just about anything that has the DS name, you won't regret picking this up. It may catch you off guard, but you will enjoy it as I did.

The short, rhymed text, replete with exclamation points, pounds away like a rapid heartbeat--``Boosters blast!/Moving fast./Engines roaring./Rocket soaring''-- while the young traveler, resembling the Michelin Man in his huge, orange spacesuit, tumbles about in free fall, watches the earth rise from the lunar surface, then waves at the crowds celebrating his return before bounding back into his parents' arms, and to bed. Perfect for 3-5 year olds

I used this book for my 3-5 year old preschoolers. They absolutely loved it. Their favorite part was the "moon rocks in a box" so me made our own moon rocks by wadding up foil and rolling it in paint and then glitter mixed with sand. All of the kids wanted to read the book or play with the rocks when it was time to choose centers at choice time.

I think everybody knows how to play poker.They just don't know how to do it well.That's how I am.You get instructions on the different types of hands poker has and which suit beats other combinations. You will learn the strategy of playing different card combinations.Anther thing that it teaches you is how to learn to spot when other players are bluffing.Each person has different "tells" and if you don't know them you will lose alot.You will also learn the art of how to bluff,which will I crease you chances of winning. There's a lot of them that I sure wouldn't have recognized before I read this book.another strategy to know is when to fold a hand.And the rewards and consequences of not putting down a hand.The book explains t that some good hands need to be folded( once again, that's me,I hate to fold I need) and how to tell which ones.And the most important thing to know,to me at least is how to bet.Without knowing that there's no point in learning everything else.The book breaks down how much to bet on what hand.I was surprised at how easy it was to learn from this book. Whether you are a first time player or have been at it a long time; you will be educated on the ins and out a of the fame.I had no trouble understanding this book and you shouldn't either.I received this product at a discount in exchange for my honest review

Don't be trick by those bluffs. Master the Game!

I don't gamble nor most of my friends but whenever we get together all of my friends know how to play poker except me. They would play with poker the whole night while I become somewhat of their hostess preparing their foods and drinks; making sure everything is alright. I made a conviction to myself that I would learn poker and beat all my friends. So I started studying the game, reading books and watching actual games then playing starting with amateurs to more experience players. My learning curve has been excellent I should say. Thanks on a big part to this book. Everything you need to learn about Poker is in this book but of course you still need actual practice to really master this skill. As the saying goes if you are prepared you already won half the battle; this is what this book will do for you, it will prepare. It will not let you get off-guard or surprise by the tricks of your opponent. Your every hand is calculated and base on tested strategy by master poker players.

My rich friend was a casino addict or better say poker addict. I accompanied her once and while all of them are enjoying I'm trying really hard to understand their terms but I can't really get it. My being out of place at that time pushed me to buy this book.

I began reading the middle part for terminologies and the author did a good job not just on defining each but giving sample sentences as well. For the strategies and bluffs, though I still don't play poker, I can say they are effective and my friend agreed to me as well. She actually read the whole book on my reader and finished it with a burning spirit to win. Well base on how helpful it is to me I'm happy to give this rating.

Cute! Funny! And Sweet!

My readers are two 2-1/2-yer-old girls. They like! And so does mom.

I never thought I'd think a picture book about a fly would be cute, but this fly IS cute! Big eyes and adorable expressions. I like reading a book about bugs that doesn't depict them as icky.

And I never thought a picture book about a fly and Frankenstein situation would be sweet...but it IS! All of the books in this series have a wonderful undercurrent of friendship. The boy and his fly are total buds. A nice departure from the usual friendship between a boy and his dog.

We have two in the series, and I think we will get Fly Guy #8: Fly Guy Meets Fly Girl! next.

Sweet and funny

As pretty much always, Fly Guy doesn't disappoint here. Arnold's pictures are witty, bold and reward looking closely; the text is pretty much perfect for the very early reader; the plot and resolution are sweet and funny and representative of the enduring bond between a boy and his pet fly. I'll kind of miss these when my youngest gets too old for them.

Plenty of action with violence and sexual atrocities. Beware.

The author writes about the 9th Calvary which was a unit comprised of Negro soldiers and commanded by Caucasian officers. The trials, tribulations and hardship the unit experienced, the loss of life to the various ethnic groups, the life, land, and freedom of the American Indian that was taken, all made for a difficult read. Mr. Benton, however has an extremely polite tone between the characters that could be more of how he wanted the relationships to be, rather than how it actually was. Nonetheless, I applaud the author for writing about this subject and will purchase another book.

and really like them. But this one

Not real impressed with this one. I have purchased many of his books, and really like them. But this one,,,,,,ummm, not so much. The subject matter is difficult to write about in todays needs for political correctness. This was a good try, but too politically correct for the time it was about. These Buffalo solders were tuff heroes of our history who fought cultural and discrimination battles constantly while accomplishing assignments equal to any other organization. This book seemed to tip toe around the issues.

I loved this book. If you like books about the days of the trappers and settlers you will enjoy this book. It kept my attention and I couldn't put it down. I hated to see the book end and look forward to reading more like it.
