Nick Payne is the author of the plays If There Is I Haven't Found It Yet, which won the London Evening Standard Theatre Award for best play; Wanderlust; One Day When We Were Young; and Lay Down Your Cross, among others. He is the winner of the 2009 George Devine Award for Most Promising Playwright and the 2012 Harold Pinter Playwright's Award. He is currently under commission with the Royal Court Theatre, the Donmare Warehouse, and the Manhattan Theatre Club. He was born in 1984 and lives in Norwich, England.

Where do we go from here?

This play truly was something special. If you've ever read or seen "Sure Thing" by David Ives, this runs right down a similar path. However, this is a full-length play... at least it's longer than "Sure Thing." It is grounded in reality which allows each individual scenario to be believable in its own right.

I laughed out loud and I felt my heartstrings being plucked by cruel realities and unfortunate timing.

While this is a celebration of the idea of alternate realities, it deals with the idea that we as humans actually do not have any control over the big picture. Everything will always fall as it always was going to fall. The constellations in the sky are always the same. You can't change the destination, so why not change the journey? Decide what you can, and let fate decide the rest.

Soon to be in every Theatre in America

Saw this a few weeks ago with Jake Gyllenhall and Ruth Wilson and just loved it! It is David Ives' All in the Timing with a British accent. It is funny; it is sad; it is imaginative. It is all of the things most new plays aren't. As with Logan's Red this play will be done all over America and at 70 minutes long with only two actors it is going to be a young actors' dream roll. Buy it and enjoy the wonderful twists of language. You will not be disappointed.

A key element of this play is that some lines are repeated in different circumstances, with different tones and emphases--thus, would read this script only if you're an actor, otherwise would recommend watching it live.

I Can't Wait for the Next Volume

Ms. Kiernan has started compiling what she regards as her most representative short fiction, reprinted with new short ruminations after each tale describing her current feelings towards it. This first volume covers 1993-2004.

I love her writing because she is the only contemporary supernatural writer today who reminds me of the masters whose works led me to love this genre: James (Henry & M.R.), Blackwood, Machen, Vernon Lee, Wharton, De La Mare, and of course Lovecraft. And I love her because she brings that talent to places, alien planets and skid rows and lesbian hearts, that old timers couldn't or wouldn't visit. She can be vigorous, literate, poetic, subtle, vulgar, obscene all at the same time. I love the part of her style that is literate and poetic; I endure and accept the vulgarity and obscenity. My favorites are pure supernatural stories like, say, "Postcards from the King of Tides" and "Spindleshanks," where she not only doesn't show you whatever is disturbing the peace but makes you grateful for her reserve.

My biggest disappointment was "The Dry Salvages," her attempt to fuse science fiction with supernatural terror. I found her buildup to be her most mouthwatering since I'd read my favorite of her novels, "Threshold." Both novels had rather subdued resolutions but I reacted to them differently. I thought "Threshold" ended appropriately for a horror novel that was trying to recreate the old school frissons readers got from stories like "The Willows." I was let down by such an ending in the Salvages. I think I just wanted something different from what was, despite the atmosphere, still a sci-fi novel.

I liked most of her other science fiction horror stories, both in this collection and in her wonderful Sirenia Digest publication. I think these worked better because the horrors in them were based on hard sci-fi, very physical horrors. As for the fusion she wanted, I think she did better in the story that followed, "The Worm in My Mind's Eye." I could believe that the self-tormenting narrator had seen something like the Salvages shadow and that that sight had made her life unlivable. Her response was a convincing blend of physical horror - self-dissection by droid - and psychological angst - fear of Alone and the fire inside her.

Along with supernatural horror and science fiction, Kiernan has her version of a paranormal action heroine,
Dancy Flammarion, an albino teenage girl who is either a schizophrenic or an angel-guided demon hunter , or maybe both. I like to read this sort of stuff -- I got addicted to Buffy -- and Kiernan's take is a breath of fresh air. I haven't every Dancy story just yet so I am worried about her current and future condition. Kiernan went through a phase of creating a brave and vibrant woman in one novel only to kill her off in the sequel. I have owned Daughter of Hounds for nearly a decade and still haven't got the nerve up to read it.

I lost track of where I was in the book - easy on a Kindle - and was surprised and saddened when I saw I had reached the end. I can't wait for volume two.

Two Worlds and In Between

One of the pleasures of reading widely is that you can achieve enough distance from an author's work to make you forget how brilliant it is, so that when you return to that author, the rediscovery is almost as powerful as the initial encounter. Caitlín R. Kiernan is such a talent, and her latest collection, Two Worlds and In Between, is ideal both for discovery and rediscovery. It's a "best-of" volume spanning 1993-2004, and like all great retrospectives it demonstrates at once the range of which its author is capable and the recurring themes, images, and stylistic features that make her work distinctive. At about 200,000 words and nearly 600 pages, it's a generous selection, including 25 short stories and novelettes and a long novella, each followed by a brief author's note on its genesis or its place in Kiernan's oeuvre. But enough of facts and generalities: on to the stories.

"Lucy has been at the window again, her sharp nails tap-tapping on the glass, scratching out there in the rain like an animal begging to be let in. Poor Lucy, alone in the storm. Mina reaches to ring for the nurse, stops halfway, forcing herself to believe that all she's hearing is the rasping limbs of the crape myrtle, whipped by the wind, winter-bare twigs scritching like fingernails on the rain-slick glass. She forces her hand back down onto the warm blanket. And she knows well enough that this simple action says so much. Retreat, pulling back from the cold risks; windows kept shut against night and chill and the thunder."

The tricky thing about retrospectives is that they're usually arranged chronologically, putting the weakest work in front. Kiernan herself observes of two of the first three stories in the collection that they seem to her more ambitious than successful. But the ambitions themselves are enough to make these stories basically satisfying, especially given Kiernan's style, which even in her earliest work lacks any hint of awkwardness and has the darkly propulsive intensity that has become one of her hallmarks. The prose has been touched up over the years, but a look back at the original versions shows that this was only a honing of already-polished language.

"Emptiness Spoke Eloquent," quoted above, follows the long decline of Mina Murray in the aftermath of Dracula, and by interweaving her personal tragedies into the sweep of the century (world war, influenza, interwar Paris, war again, psychoanalysis in 1950s Manhattan), impresses even as it fails to compel on an emotional level. "To This Water (Johnstown, Pennsylvania 1889)" has a few extraordinary evocations of a storm, but likewise lacks the psychological force that would be necessary to guide the reader through its careful tangles of prose.

But with the very next story, "Tears Seven Times Salt," that force arrives, and is instantly overwhelming. This story was recently chosen for the mammoth Century's Best Horror Fiction, and its invocation of displacement, dissatisfaction with identity, despair easily earns the distinction. The great genius of Kiernan's early writing is its depiction of the lives of outsiders and isolates; as Neil Gaiman put it, she is "the poet and bard of the wasted and the lost." Addicts, prostitutes, blocked artists, those who can't or don't want to find a place in what is sometimes called the adult world: Kiernan's gift is to write about them so sympathetically that even those who dismiss them as lazy or twisted can be made to understand how their lives feel, how the "unnatural" becomes the only natural thing.

"Three very small rooms and each of them filled with his books and newspapers, his files and clippings and folders. The things he has written directly on the walls with Magic Marker because there wasn't time to find a sheet of paper before he forgot. Mountains of magazines slumped like glossy landslides to bury silverfish and roaches, Fate and Fortean Times, journals for modern alchemists and cryptozoological societies and ufology cults. Exactly 1,348 index cards thumbtacked or stapled to plaster the fragile, drained color of dirty eggshells and coffee-ground stains. Testaments uncorrelated, data uncollated, and someday the concordance and cross-reference alone will be a hundred thousand pages long."

That's from "Rats Live on No Evil Star," a portrait of something like schizophrenia, of pattern-making and the desperate search for truth, and the portrait of eccentricity, the evocation of a decayed yet strangely attractive place, are found throughout these early pieces. The settings, from the heat of a New Orleans summer to the chill solitude of a millionaire's estate on the Hudson, are as vividly captured as the flawed, obsessive, volative characters who populate them. But there's more at work than human yearning and despair; these are, after all, fantasy stories, dark and disturbing ones. Kiernan's supernaturalism, enhanced by her knowledge of geology and paleontology, of things so ancient or unrecognizable that to the common imagination they might as well be monsters, is, in its very different way, as reserved and elusive as that of the classic ghost story; it's unsurprising that the producer who wanted to turn the marvelous "Onion" into a screenplay should have mistaken it for only the first half of a story. Her work may not offer the expected answers, but as Kiernan writes, "one good mystery is worth a thousand solutions," and it is the awe brought on by the inscrutability of the phenomena she writes about that gives them their staying power. Without answers, there are only the images, which tap into the terror that comes when our fragile sense of order is disrupted.

"But Frank didn't run away, and when he pressed his face to the crack in the wall, he could see that the fields stretched away for miles and miles, crimson meadows beneath a sky the yellow-green of an old bruise. The white trees that writhed and rustled in the choking, spicy breeze, and far, far away, the black enormous thing striding slowly through the grass on bandy, stilt-long legs."

As Kiernan's style develops over the course of the collection, another gift becomes evident, a mastery of narrative structure comparable to H. P. Lovecraft's. Stories told out of chronological order, further flashbacks within those disordered sections, dreams that echo the unrevealed past or foreshadow the future, excerpts from books whose banality is belied by the reader's knowledge of their true significance: Kiernan has mastered every device, gradually pulling back the curtain to reveal as much as she's ever going to. Small masterpieces like "Andromeda Among the Stones" and "La Peau Verte" use this non-linearity to great effect, building up to their defining moments so that those moments have the grandeur, the terrible and long-lasting reverb, for readers that they do for the characters. Eventually Kiernan begins to experiment with the first-person point-of-view, which she had long resisted, and the narrator's struggle with ordering events, with describing the indescribable and focusing on the horrific, further increases the brilliant structural complexity out of which fleeting and sinister knowledge emerges. For readers expecting the straightforward, the double whammy of elaborate structure and elusive meaning will be frustrating, but for those who prefer carefully-orchestrated and suggestive cosmic dread, there are few greater pleasures.

I wish I could convey what makes each of the stories in this collection excellent, but I don't know how to do so without bogging down in plot summary, which is beside the point. So let me mention only a few favorites. "The Road of Pins," a werewolf story except that it isn't one at all, in which profound unease grows out of the work of a contemporary artist, a mysterious film, and the writer's block and fragile romance of the protagonist. "The Dead and the Moonstruck," which shows the unexpected ease with which Kiernan's decidedly adult vision can be adapted for a satisfying young-adult story. I especially admired the few science fiction stories mixed in with the fantasy. Science fiction allows the weirdness that exists in the shadows of Kiernan's fantasies to emerge into the light and define her universe, which makes the element of cosmic terror all the more potent. In "Riding the White Bull" and "The Dry Salvages," the aliens are truly alien, but they're only a part of the strangeness of space-- vast, dangerous, beautiful-- and human society itself has or might become a nightmare scenario.

I give up. That paragraph feels hopelessly false, exactly what I might say about half a dozen writers I admire, nothing specific to Kiernan's talent. All I can think to do is quote more, the stopgap of throwing out the author's words when my own prove insufficient. And in the end, it's perhaps the way an author uses words that matters most. Themes, motifs, structural devices: they're common coin, accessible to anyone, but the flow of sentences is nearly impossible to imitate.

"And all the world goes white, a suffocating white where there is no sky and no earth, nothing to divide the one from the other, and the Arctic wind shrieks in her ears, and snow stings her bare skin. Not the top of the world, but somewhere very near it, a rocky scrap of land spanning a freezing sea, connecting continents in a far-off time of glaciers. Dancy wants to shut her eyes. Then, at least, there would only be black, not this appalling, endless white, and she thinks about going to sleep, drifting down to someplace farther inside herself, the final still point in this implosion, down beyond the cold. But she knows that would mean death, in this place, this ~when~, some mute instinct to keep her moving, answering to her empty belly when she only wants to be still."

A simple paragraph in some ways, picked more or less at random, but what I respond to in Caitlín R. Kiernan's fiction is there as much as it is anywhere else. It's not representative of her style-- no one paragraph could be-- but it has a compelling rhythm, captures the sense of being tossed into the deep end, somewhere you can't catch your breath, can only hold it in as you navigate the marvelous, malevolent landscape while looking for the way out. An easy experience? No. Never crude, Kiernan's work is nonetheless raw, likely to upset certain readers in ways they aren't looking for. But anything worth reading is going to upset someone, and if you want fiction that juxtaposes emotional frailty with the magnitude of the universe, fantasy that leads you someplace ~else~ and makes that place as real as here and now, Kiernan should be at the very top of your reading list.

I enjoyed this book alot and I'm pleased to have a copy in my collection. As is the way with most fiction collections some stories I enjoyed more than others. Whilst that is the case there is one thing consistent throughout all of these tales in this book, Kiernan’s prose style. There is no doubt in my mind that she can write beautifully. I do think that it is a book to dip in and out of and I'm glad that is the way I chose to read this collection. I have a copy of volume 2 and I'll read it in the same way. I'll sum this up by saying that if you enjoy weird genre fiction then this book is essential in my opinion.

About the Author

Randal E. Bryant received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan in 1973 and then attended graduate school at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, receiving his PhD degree in computer science in 1981. He spent three years as an assistant professor at the California Institute of Technology, and has been on the faculty at Carnegie Mellon since 1984. For five of those years he served as head of the Computer Science Department, and for ten of them he served as Dean of the School of Computer Science. He is currently a university professor of computer science. He also holds a courtesy appointment with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Professor Bryant has taught courses in computer systems at both the undergraduate and graduate level for around 40 years. Over many years of teaching computer architecture courses, he began shifting the focus from how computers are designed to how programmers can write more efficient and reliable programs if they understand the system better. Together with Professor O’Hallaron, he developed the course 15-213, Introduction to Computer Systems, at Carnegie Mellon that is the basis for this book. He has also taught courses in algorithms, programming, computer networking, distributed systems, and VLSI design.

Most of Professor Bryant’s research concerns the design of software tools to help software and hardware designers verify the correctness of their systems. These include several types of simulators, as well as formal verification tools that prove the correctness of a design using mathematical methods. He has published over 150 technical papers. His research results are used by major computer manufacturers, including Intel, IBM, Fujitsu, and Microsoft. He has won several major awards for his research. These include two inventor recognition awards and a technical achievement award from the Semiconductor Research Corporation, the Kanellakis Theory and Practice Award from the Association for Computer Machinery (ACM), and the W. R. G. Baker Award, the Emmanuel Piore Award, the Phil Kaufman Award, and the A. Richard Newton Award from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He is a fellow of both the ACM and the IEEE and a member of both the US National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

David R. O’Hallaron is a professor of computer science and electrical and computer engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. He received his PhD from the University of Virginia. He served as the director of Intel Labs, Pittsburgh, from 2007 to 2010.

He has taught computer systems courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels for 20 years on such topics as computer architecture, introductory computer systems, parallel processor design, and Internet services. Together with Professor Bryant, he developed the course at Carnegie Mellon that led to this book. In 2004, he was awarded the Herbert Simon Award for Teaching Excellence by the CMU School of Computer Science, an award for which the winner is chosen based on a poll of the students.

Professor O’Hallaron works in the area of computer systems, with specific interests in software systems for scientific computing, data-intensive computing, and virtualization. The best-known example of his work is the Quake project, an endeavor involving a group of computer scientists, civil engineers, and seismologists who have developed the ability to predict the motion of the ground during strong earthquakes. In 2003, Professor O’Hallaron and the other members of the Quake team won the Gordon Bell Prize, the top international prize in high-performance computing. His current work focuses on the notion of autograding, that is, programs that evaluate the quality of other programs.

Great textbook.

This book is very readable. It gives you a pretty comprehensive tour of modern computer system while leaving many unnecessary details out.

That being said, I think there are times when the authors can be more concise (e.g. chap 2 is too "mathematical"). As I know this book is usually used for a second/third undergraduate CS course, so putting too many details in the book is kind of demanding.

Doing the labs is an indispensable part of reading this book. They can be found on the book site and they are amazingly fun.

Some people have pointed out that this book is too "academic." Even though that is true to some extent, I think this book is still a must-read since it is meant to give you a good foundation. Once you are done with this book it is fairly easy to pick up "industry" knowledge.

Not for beginers.

This book loses 1 star just by not having a hyper linked table of contents. You have to page through the book to get to the recipe that you want.

The author makes a good sell on just why commercial soaps are harmful to you and the environment. Then she completely misses explaining the benefits of various ingredients such as teatree oil (antiviral, antibiotic and antifungal). I know that different oils have different benefits from other books about natural cosmetics. Sarah Brooks doesn't mention any of them.

Some of the terms she uses in recipes are never explained "Stir continuously until you get medium trace." ???? But, she explains how to zero out a scale just about every time something gets measured.

She also tells you to prepare your mold by lining it with freezer paper. This step is mentioned in the section on necessary equipment, and is never explained again. She never mentions what preparation would be needed if you wanted to use an mold for individual bars of soap instead of cutting apart a slab.

This book has wrong and misleading information with incomplete directions. It is definitely not for beginners. It appears the author did a little Internet research on soap making and decided to write a book on the subject. I have my doubts as to whether the author has even made a bar soap.

There Can Be Only One (and this is the first ...)

This is the first novel concerning the Highlander, Connor MacLeod. (There are several concerning his successor, Duncan, in which Connor also appears.) We are introduced to the concept of The Game, in which a race of Immortals vie to be the remaining one in a battle of good, evil and "off with his head." If you are a fan of the Highlander TV show, I recommend reading this book and seeing the first movie -- it'll help you understand where Duncan comes from (and why Endgame was such an awesome movie).

Get the Director's Cut DVD - forget the book

Since the current weapon of Connor MacLeod is a katana, you would think that the authors might have used the word once in the book. The second time I saw "Samurai sword" I knew I should have just watched the movie again.
The authors not only botched some of the most poignant moments of the story, but I wasn't impressed with the description of the final battle between MacLeod and the Kurgan.
I think the Director's Cut version of the original Highlander movie is one of the best written movies I've seen. Maybe that's why this novel fell so far short of my expectations.
If you can get a copy of the script to Highlander, you'll get a much better feel for the themes to the movie - avoid this book!
Oh well, at least I learned how to spell pendejo.

An excellent book from an excellent movie

Back in the mid-80's I saw "The Highlander" at my local movie house and fell in love with it. The book is well written and adds some extra girth to the story that the movie (even in its uncut version) did not include. The greatest appeal about Highlander is the concept of immortality and the implications of being able to live for an infinite period (as long as your head remains attached that is). The book will keep you riveted and any lover of fantasy or science fiction would appreciate this work.

Great study tips and an invaluable supply of practice questions.

Cramming for a geo bee is really tough. There's a near infinite amount of information about the world for you to try to digest - but precious little information about what a bee is really like and what kind of questions they really ask. "The Geography Bee Complete Preparation Handbook" covers those issues better than anything else out there. While there is some good geography overview source materials here - this isn't what makes this book special. The study guides are good, but can't compete with online games like geonet or purposegames. The real strength of this book is the articles about what the bee is really like and how to go about structuring your study plans and practice sessions. That and the 1001 practice questions. These questions are true to the style and feeling of real Nat'l Geographic GeoBee questions. Time and again I find I have trouble cooking up a good supply of these types of questions for study sessions on my own. Having a big supply like this on hand is invaluable. My only real complaint is that there isn't more of them. I'd like a book of 10,001 questions!

All in all, this is the best and most useful geography bee study guide I've seen (and I've seen most). Highly recommended for anyone getting prepared for a geography bee.

About the Author

Hiroyuki Kojima received his PhD in Economics from the Graduate School of Economics, Faculty of Economics, at the University of Tokyo. He has worked as a lecturer and is now an associate professor in the Faculty of Economics at Teikyo University in Tokyo, Japan. While well-regarded as an economist, he is also active as an essayist and has published a wide range of books on mathematics and economics at the fundamental, practical, and academic levels.

A muddle with a lot to be desired.

So, I have a fairly good background in higher Math, including a year of Calculus. I have been researching good math books for young people who are having problems are would benefit from a decent intro to the various upper level subjects before they become buried in equations. Concerning the Manga Guide, I find that a reader would greatly benefit from already having had at least a fair intro. to the Calculus in order to avoid becoming quickly swamped in otherwise meaningless equations. I found this book was created with good intentions but is rather muddled and skips a good deal of explanatory material. Difficult to follow if you are unable to fill in the gaps (again, requiring a background in the subject). I know Japanese and actually enjoy Manga but this simply isn't the answer to a potential student but more like a review (and not even a good review) of the subject. The book is not all together useless but I just don't think it accomplishes its objective. I tell you what: the best book of its kind is _Calculus Made Easy_, originally authored by Silvanus Thompson and edited by Martin Gardner. The book is over 250 pages but offers what I consider the best, most concise, detailed intro. to the Calculus I have been able discover. It offers a logical, step-for-step instruction accompanied by plenty of easy but instructive exercises. Anyhoo , that's my advice.

A newer perspective

This book does a good job of explaining core concepts in an interesting and much more friendly way than most textbooks. It doesn't go into the details as deeply as a dry textbook might, but it does a very good job of explaining what the equations are actual doing, from a real world (manga?) perspective, something that most textbooks ignore completely.

This book will likely help you if you are having conceptual hangups in your calculus class, but don't expect it to replace your text book, it simply doesn't provide that kind of bulk material.

Good Calculus Help for Teens

Purchased this book for a amime addicted teenager who is struggling in Calculus. We had tried other Calculus help books in the past, but she wasn't interested in them and they did not help. Since she is very interested in reading Manga (she chose the words anime addicted), this book captured her interest and helped to explain topics that were difficult for her to grasp. She has since raised her grade in the class.
