The Best Interface Is No Interface: The simple path to brilliant technology (Voices That Matter), by Golden Krishna

Our love affair with the digital interface is out of control. We’ve embraced it in the boardroom, the bedroom, and the bathroom.

Screens have taken over our lives. Most people spend over eight hours a day staring at a screen, and some “technological innovators” are hoping to grab even more of your eyeball time. You have screens in your pocket, in your car, on your appliances, and maybe even on your face. Average smartphone users check their phones 150 times a day, responding to the addictive buzz of Facebook or emails or Twitter.

Are you sick? There’s an app for that! Need to pray? There’s an app for that! Dead? Well, there’s an app for that, too! And most apps are intentionally addictive distractions that end up taking our attention away from things like family, friends, sleep, and oncoming traffic.

There’s a better way.

In this book, innovator Golden Krishna challenges our world of nagging, screen-based bondage, and shows how we can build a technologically advanced world without digital interfaces.

In his insightful, raw, and often hilarious criticism, Golden reveals fascinating ways to think beyond screens using three principles that lead to more meaningful innovation. Whether you’re working in technology, or just wary of a gadget-filled future, you’ll be enlighted and entertained while discovering that the best interface is no interface.

Review

"If Silicon Valley doesn't read this book, we're all ****ed."
- Doug LeMoine, Managing Director, Cooper

“An irreverent, crazy tirade. So why should you read this book? Because irreverence is precisely what is needed today to get us out of the rut of bad, unintelligible, frustrating design. Because the book is funny, caustic, and insightful. So next time you are feeling low, just open the book to some random page and read for a few minutes. You will start smiling, laughing, and learning. A great cure for all that ails you. Why read this book? Well, because I told you to.”
-Don Norman, Design Lab, University of California, San Diego
Author of  The Design of Everyday Things, Revised and Expanded

“In this amusing, smart, and brave case against our screen-based world, Golden Krishna reinforces his position as one of the world’s foremost thinkers of user experience design.”
-  Martin Thörnkvist, Conference Director, The Conference by Media Evolution

“This essential book will hopefully mark the moment in history when we say ‘ENOUGH!‘ to screen saturation and usher in a more meaningful co-habitation with technology.”
- Kevin Farnham, Founder of Method and Co-Author of  Experience Design: A Framework for Integrating Brand, Experience, and Value

"A mind-bending, thoughtful, life-affirming and sure-to-be-controversial manifesto about how we might significantly change our relationship to the technology that surrounds us."
- Dave Gray, Author of The Connected Company and Gamestorming: A Playbook for Innovators, Rulebreakers, and Changemakers

"Krishna's book is written in a very colloquial and accessible style; at times it reads more like a great argument in a Silicon Valley coffee shop, long after closing time, at a table covered in diagrams scribbled on paper napkins. But that's exactly what makes it worth reading. It's not bland theory, but a lively tale well told by someone with deep experience in the field of user experience design."
 - PC Magazine

A great $6 book
By Hunter Harmon
Make no mistake: This is a sermon. It's not a practical guide. It's not a set of concrete steps to improve. It's the author standing at a pulpit and railing at the evils of the day. The evils are real, and unpleasant. Every designer should read it. And, considering it can be read in about an hour, that's not asking much.

However, for an everyday geek, or programmer, who doesn't have machine learning tools or skills to implement the ideas here, this book is full of lots of "No", and very little "Yes". The author suggests a few tools which are "doing it right", but offers little concrete advice for curing the ills described. So, you're left with an hour or two worth of entertainment, and little more.

In short, this is a short little sermon, which was enjoyable. It's a 5 star book at $6, but a 3 star book at $16. Read it, or better still, find it on sale later. It can wait.

I'm glad I got a chance to review this book
By Amazon Customer
I'm glad I got a chance to review this book. The premise is really incredible, I do think there will be a point where a lot of digital products will be seamless and will work without a screen BUT the book itself is not that good at delivering the right answers or at least interesting insights. Instead the author complains about the current paradigm for most of the book. He tries to be clever and visionary but instead he comes off as whiny and boring. I love the who No UI concept, I think it's very powerful, and as a product designer I was expecting to find some useful insight instead it's just a waste of time other than a few interesting parts. If there's anything positive about it it's that it made me want to actually learn big data and machine learning myself to make my own products and hopefully someday write a better version of this book with actual scenarios and real solutions.

Quick, Entertaining Read: Needs More Depth
By Dimitri Darras
"No Interface" is an entertaining and compelling polemic that I recommend to readers looking for a refreshingly contrarian take on User Experience. Is it good for purists? No. Is it a sound technical overview? Nope. Will it win awards for investigative journalism? Not hardly. It is however written humorously and sincerely and will engage you on a weekend or cross-Atlantic flight. I enjoy reading sour-puss takes on new media and this book fits the bill, with an exposition of idiotic case-studies and supporting snarky graphics. As a reasoned critique of industry trends, in line with "You are not a Gadget" and "Throwing Rocks at the Google Bus", this book laments how great brains dedicate their life work to inane, but lucrative advertising platforms, when companies need to be more original and less derivative: service their customers and users more than their shareholders (not that the two are mutually exclusive). The criticism of apps and lop-sided paid market for them was right-on-the-money, not to mention the safety risks of distracted drivers and disappointment of ersatz socialization.

"No Interface" falls short of substance on SOLUTIONS as opposed to the many FAILURES that it categorizes and details in great, mocking detail. Where are all these great "no interfaces"? The examples cited are anemic except for maybe healthcare. Where is a recognition of the substantial technical barriers to rising above the ubiquitous UI itself? Throw more sensors on devices and latch onto the IoT? Another nitpick - glorifying Snowden as a champion of privacy is not only out-of-scope, but untruthful. His supposed revelations have empowered rogue and totalitarian nations more than anything else he "accomplished". Boo on that. Finally, light pollution correlated with cancer does not mean causation - a stretch.

On a final note, the book succeeds in opening a discussion (or argument) about the need to humanize technology and come up with a better business model in doing so. I'd read a serious (and seriously funny) follow-up if there's one planned.

A Worthy Purchase
By A Customer
"Querido Alberto" is the authorized biography of the legendary Mexican singer/songwriter Juan Gabriel. Written by Gabriel's longtime friend and musical arranger Eduardo Magallanes, the book gives the reader a view into the life of the kid who grew up in the streets of Chihuahua, Mexico as Alberto Aguilera Valadez through the 1995 publication date.
Magallanes absorbs the reader immediately by opening the biography with a description of Gabriel's benefit performance at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City in 1990, the concert that became famous through audio and video sales. Magallanes then covers the life of Gabriel in short segments relating more to significance than chronology.
Magallanes addresses Gabriel's early life: the mysterious disappearance of his father three months after Gabriel's birth on January 7, 1950; the mother for whom he wrote "Amor Eterno"; the sister who lies in a coma, a state she has been in for many years; the various people who took him in off the streets and how they influenced him and his music; in essence, the steps through which Alberto Aguilera Valadez become the international pop singer known as Juan (named after a teacher) Gabriel (named after his father).
The book also includes a few chapters on Gabriel's personal life as an adult, a subject about which Gabriel is intensely private, particularly his near-30-year relationship with Laura Salas Campa and their four sons.
The book is written in Spanish but at such a level that people with a limited Spanish reading ability would be able to understand the main ideas. It includes extensive quotes by Gabriel, lyrics to many of his songs and tributes to Gabriel by Lola Beltran, Lucha Villa and other Gabriel contemporaries.
The photographs are perhaps the most intriguing part of the book. More than 100 captioned pictures show the singer's transformation from Alberto Aguilera Valadez, the poor street kid, to Juan Gabriel, the superstar. All the photos are black and white. No matter. Some allow a glimpse into Gabriel's private life. There are several pictures of his houses, his sons as young children, his partner Laura Salas and there's even one of his German shepherd dog, the breed he still keeps today.
This is a professionally written book that doesn't waste the reader's time on smutty tabloid material. It is a worthy purchase.

Random Violence: How We Talk about New Crimes and New Victims, by Joel Best

Random Violence is a deft and thought-provoking exploration of the ways we talk about—and why we worry about—new crimes and new forms of victimization. Focusing on so-called random crimes such as freeway shootings, gang violence, hate crimes, stalking, and wilding, Joel Best shows how new crime problems emerge and how some quickly fade from public attention while others spread and become enduring subjects of concern. Best's original and incisive argument illuminates the fact that while these crimes are in actuality neither new, nor epidemic, nor random, the language used to describe them nonetheless shapes both private fears and public policies.

Best scrutinizes the melodramatic quality of the American public's attitudes toward crime, exposing the cultural context for the popularity of "random violence" as a catch-all phrase to describe contemporary crime, and the fallacious belief that violence is steadily rising. He points out that the age, race, and sex of homicide victims reveal that violence is highly patterned.

Best also details the contemporary ideology of victimization, as well as the social arrangements that create and support a victim industry that can label large numbers of victims. He demonstrates why it has become commonplace to "declare war" on social problems, including drugs, crime, poverty, and cancer, and outlines the complementary influence of media, activists, officials, and experts in institutionalizing crime problems. Intrinsic to all these concerns is the way in which policy choices and outcomes are affected by the language used to describe social problems.

Review
"This book looks at the patterns of crime and violence in U.S. society and how the language people use to describe it distorts how it is understood. Turning to roles of the news media and social activists in communicating threats to personal safety and public order, best argues that American culture tends to avoid the reality of crime and its underlying causes."--J"ournal of Social Work Education

From the Inside Flap
"A major contribution to the literature on social problems, crime, and social deviance, and a fine example of what is currently the best-established theoretical approach to this material. It is laudably interdisciplinary, draws admirably from 'high' and 'low' culture, and over all asks some very challenging questions."—Philip Jenkins, Pennsylvania State University

"Random Violence extends the growing scholarly literature on the social construction of social problems by showing us how currently trendy folk knowledge obscures the most perplexing problems in American society and how it serves to foster a climate of social distrust."—Donileen Loeske, University of South Florida

Downright Dencey (Young Adult Bookshelf), by Caroline Dale Snedeker

This treasure of a novel is set on the island of Nantucket just before the War of 1812. Much more than a tale of whaling ships and gentle Quaker eccentricities, it is a tale of friendship-the kind most truly espoused by these 'plain' folk, with all the struggle and complexity one should expect. Dionis (Dencey) Coffyn is a mystery to her mother, Lydia, whose stern exterior hides a heart that breaks every time her husband Captain Tom goes to sea. Within a context of outward simplicity of living and inward intricacy of relationship, Dencey matures from the little girl who, in unquakerly violence of temper, throws a rock that wounds the town outcast. She becomes a young woman ready to bear her part in life with grace and courage. A probing portrayal of the power of love to overcome social barriers and religious strictures.

All that I remembered
By Jacquelyn Koeppen
I'd read Downright Dency in the 6th grade and loved it. Somehow or another, I've kept a memory of it's enjoyment for 60 years and one day decided I'd try to find a copy of it. I'd forgotten what the book was about but remembered that I'd read it over and over again. I so wanted not to be disappointed in that memory and started reading with apprehension. But it was still there: a stubborn, determined young girl caught between her feelings and moral upbringing. And I wanting to be more like her. At one time in my life I attended a Quaker school and enjoyed that aspect of the story, I'm so glad I have it in my library. It's a friend that's found it's way home.

Disappointed young reader
By Dave
I like the way this book was written. I like the Quaker style of it, and that's why I picked it up. But, before I get into a book,I like to skim through it to see if it's OK- a tactic I've learned from my mom.
First of all, if you hope to learn about the Quaker life from the veiw of a girl, don't read this book. All you'll bump into is a girl who gradually falls into a whimsical romantic relationship with an outcast boy that she taught how to read.
Second of all, this book teaches that if you really have to, go ahead and tell a lie. In truth, there is never a time in life where you really have to tell a lie. Lies are bad with no exception. You can always work around telling a lie.

So overall, this book has a good Quaker vocabulary, but a few poor moral choices.

A Story For Everyone
By A Customer
"Downright Dencey" tells the story of Dionis (Dencey) Coffyn and Sammie Jetsam. The story begins when Jetsam is insulting Dencey's family. Dencey gets mad at him and throws a stone at him. The stone cuts his arm and injures him badly. When Dionis asks for forgiveness, Jetsam says that she must give him her one and only storybook, "Pilgrim's Progress" and teach him to read it. This becomes a problem. Dencey's mother won't let her teach him if she asks for permission, so she must lie to teach him. More than once, Jetsam's care giver, the one and only drunk Injun Jill, tries to capture Dencey and force her away, and more than once, Jetsam stands up to Injun Jill and distracts her, while Dencey safely gets away.
During this time, Jetsam begins to learn to read and learns what respect is. Finally he grows up to be a great young man, and as a young man, he falls in love with Dencey. But will the rest of the town accept him the way Dencey does?
This book is for everyone. It's part love story, part adventure story, part everything-but-the-kitchen-sink. It's no wonder that it was a 1928 Newbery Honor Book! For ages 10-17.

Starting Point, 1979-1996, by Hayao Miyazaki

The first of a pair of memoirs in collection form, featuring essays, interviews, and even a brief comic on the history of airline food, from the master animator.

In the first two decades of his career, filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki laid the groundwork for his legendary movies. Starting Point is a collection of essays, interviews, and memoirs that go back to the roots of Miyazaki's childhood, the formulation of his theories of animation, and the founding of Studio Ghibli.

Before directing such acclaimed films as Spirited Away, Miyazaki was just another salaried animator, but with a vision of his own. Follow him as he takes his first steps on the road to success, experience his frustrations with the manga and animation industries that often suffocate creativity, and realize the importance of bringing the childhood dreams of the world to life. Starting Point: 1979-1996 is not just a chronicle of the life of a man whose own dreams have come true, it is a tribute to the power of the moving image.

In 2005 he was awarded the Venice International Film Festival's Golden Lion Award for Lifetime Achievement, and his Studio Ghibli received the festival's Osella Award for overall achievement in 2004. Miyazaki's films include Spirited Away, winner of the 2002 Academy Award® for Best Animated Feature Film, as well as Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle, and Ponyo, all of which have received great acclaim in the U.S. Miyazaki's other achievements include the highly regarded manga series Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind and Starting Point: 1979-1996, a collection of essays, interviews, and memoirs that chronicle his early career and the development of his theories of animation. A great, complex read
By Amazon Customer
Starting Point: 1979-1996 is an amazing book. It's a heavy read, with essays covering everything from Miyazaki's works, to philosophy and religion, Japanese economy and the life of an animator and so much more. I found it a contradictory, frustrating and often pessimistic read but also to be incredibly fascinating and honest. It adds a whole new dimension to the man we know in Miyazaki. He's a genius as an animator but it seems he must be a terribly unfulfilled person in real life (he missed much of his children's lives due to his workaholic attitude). The book could do with some more pictures and maybe more information on his Nausicaa manga but otherwise it's a brilliant, if not always a happy read. I hope Viz Media release the sequel - Turning Point: 1997-2008, sometime in the near future. Highly recommended for Miyazaki fans. 5/5

A Must-Read For All Miyazaki Fans
By Johanna
I bought Starting Point at the beginning of this year as material for a research paper I was writing on three of Hayao Miyazaki's films. Since then, I have read the entire thing and reread multiple portions of this extraordinary book. It became an invaluable resource for me as I wrote my paper, but it was also a very enjoyable and personal book. Over the course of the weeks it took me to finish it, I felt like I actually got to know Hayao Miyazaki. As I told several people, Starting Point is definitely the best book I have purchased in a very long time, and so far it is the best thing I have read this year. With all the wonderful essays, interviews, directorial memos, and even drawings it contains, I'm surprised there hasn't been more hype about it. It is an absolute must-read for any Miyazaki fan. I can't believe we had to wait more than fifteen years for this book to be translated and published in the United States (it was first published in Japan in 1996).

The book, which is nearly 500 pages long, has been divided into several parts and includes a foreword by John Lasseter (director of Toy Story) and an afterword by Isao Takahata (director of Grave of the Fireflies). The first part, entitled "On Creating Animation" is perhaps the most technical part of the book. Even though many of Miyazaki's thoughts on animation and film techniques were a bit over my head, I still enjoyed reading those chapters and thinking about them. Miyazaki's writing style is simple enough that I didn't feel swept away by too much jargon or overly-technical terms. For filmmakers and those interested in how animation works, this part of the book will be fascinating. The second part, called "On The Periphery of the Work" was similar to the previous section in that it contained chapters about animation techniques. However, Miyazaki mainly writes about his thoughts on various animated films. He also includes some very short essays like "The Tokyo I Love" that almost feel like journal entries. Part three, "People", is full of essays about individuals who have helped, inspired, and even irritated Miyazaki. Two of my favorites are "I Left Raising Our Children To My Wife" and "My Old Man's Back." These are both very vulnerable essays about some of the people closest to Miyazaki, and reading them almost brought tears to my eyes.

"A Story in Color" and part of "My Favorite Things" give the reader a short break from the text with a comic and some illustrations. "Dining in Midair" is a charming and sometimes amusing comic about the history of in-flight dining. Scrapbooks No. 1 - 3 in the beginning of "My Favorite Things" display some pictures of flying machines, tanks, and cars, and also a very short illustrated story called "I Want A Garden Like This." Then we are back to more essays for the remaining part of "Favorite Things." My favorite essay in this section is "My Random Thoughts Notebook Is My Hobby." This one made me laugh because I expected it to be an essay about Miyazaki's random thoughts notebook. However, it was simply a piece full of disjointed thoughts, memories, and observations.

"Planning Notes; Directorial Memoranda" was a nice inclusion and the directorial memos were fun to read. For those who want more details about some of their favorite Miyazaki films like Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, Porco Rosso, and Princess Mononoke, this section is for them. Although the memos are fairly short, I found them fascinating and enjoyable. However, for those who really want depth and insight into their favorite films, "Works" is the part to flip to. This section has a lot of information on Miyazaki's earlier works, like Lupin III, Future Boy Conan, and Panda! Go Panda! I had not heard of any of these before reading the book, but reading the chapter on Lupin was what convinced me to watch the film Lupin III: Castle of Cagliostro, which was excellent. "Works" also has quite a few extensive chapters on Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, My Neighbor Totoro, and Castle in the Sky. Miyazaki focuses on Nausicaä especially in several chapters, one of my favorites being an interview titled "Nature Is Both Generous and Ferocious."

All in all, this book was excellent and I am very pleased to have it in my library. I have heard rumors that Viz Media might be publishing Miyazaki's later book Turning Point: 1997 - 2008 soon, and I hope that is the case. Much as I enjoyed this book, I would love to read more about Miyazaki's later works like Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, and Ponyo. In the meantime, I plan to read this book over and over again, and I encourage anyone interested in Miyazaki's works (or even just interested in film and animation) to pick up a copy.

The vision of a genius
By klo_dude
Hayao Miyazaki is considered one of the best directors of animation history.
That easily is the best reason of why to buy this book. Covering the sursprisingly amount of 500 pages, Starting Point (in a beatiful edition by Viz Media) icludes not only all the essays and commentaries written by Miyazaki between 1979 and 1996, but also integrates a lot of skecthes, cartoons and rare drawings of the famous director. Not only that, but the biggest catch of the book is discovering that Miyazaki, as what it is (a genius), it's also a complex individual and a likeable writer. His opinions included in this book, cover a wide variety of topics: the history of Japan, animation principles, evolution of the anime industry, his personal life, opinions of society, ecology, war and even life.

Starting Point is a provoking and complex read. The opinions of Miyazaki may come as overly extreme or controversial, but in his broad vision of the world is clear that he makes his animated movies with passion and care for the children (which are his intended audience). Viz Media deserves a price for this hardcover edition, the design and quality is top-notch and includes a brief, but insightful introduction by John Lasseter and an Afterword, by the also amazing director, Isao Takahata -from Grave of the Fireflies fame-.

A recommended read by fans of anime, animation or Studio Ghibli and a must-buy by animation students.

The plot line was fine, but the pacing was really choppy and a little difficult to follow. Will try another one.

—Ayelet Waldman, author of Bad Mother

“Caitlin Moran is so fabulous, so funny, so freshly feminist. I don’t want to be like her—I want to be her.”
—Peggy Orenstein, author of Cinderella Ate My Daughter

Caitlin Moran puts a new face on feminism, cutting to the heart of women’s issues today with her irreverent, transcendent, and hilarious How to Be a Woman. “Half memoir, half polemic, and entirely necessary,” (Elle UK), Moran’s debut was an instant runaway bestseller in England as well as an Amazon UK Top Ten book of the year; still riding high on bestseller lists months after publication, it is a bona fide cultural phenomenon. Now poised to take American womanhood by storm, here is a book that Vanity Fair calls “the U.K. version of Tina Fey’s Bossypants….You will laugh out loud, wince, and—in my case—feel proud to be the same gender as the author.”

Review
“It is bracing in this season of losing [Nora] Ephron to discover a younger feminist writer who scrimmages with the patriarchy and drop kicks zingers with comic flair….A must-read for anyone curious to find out just how very funny a self-proclaimed ‘strident feminist’ can be.” (Maureen Corrigan, NPR's Fresh Air)

“A fresh, funny take on modern feminism that shines a light on issues facing every woman, lovingly boiled down to the basics with insight and humor.” (Today Show)

“Scathingly funny….Moran makes us think about femininity and feminism, and whether you agree or not, she’s fascinating.” (People (3 ½ stars))

“Caitlin Moran taught me more about being a woman than being a woman did. I’m pretty sure I had testicles before I read this book.” (Jenny Lawson, author of Let's Pretend This Never Happened: A Mostly True Memoir)

“There are lots of things to love about Caitlin Moran’s How to Be a Woman….A glorious, timely stand against sexism so ingrained we barely even notice it. It is, in the dour language [Moran] militates so brilliantly against, a book that needed to be written.” (New York Times)

“The UK’s answer to Tina Fey, Chelsea Handler, and Lena Dunham all rolled into one.” (Marie Claire)

“Moran’s frank wit is appealing.” (The New Yorker)

“A hilarious neo-feminist manifesto….Moran reinvigorates women’s lib with her personal and political polemic.” (NPR.org)

“There is a good reason for [its success]: it is pretty phenomenal….[Moran] wrote the book in just 5 months….Chances are you’ll read it in far less time than that, turning down the corners of extra-resonating pages to come back to later.” (Jenn Doll, The Atlantic Wire)

“With her drunk-on-gin-with-my-lady-friends honesty and humor, Moran, a Times of London columnist, snips the man out of manifesto, spinning her message of radically sensible female empowerment.” (Vanity Fair.com)

“Bravely and brilliantly weaves personal anecdotes and cutting insight into a book that is at once instructional, confessional, and a call for change….Moran shifts effortlessly between her own hilarious experiences and larger questions about women’s place in the modern world.” (Interview Magazine)

“As funny and careerist as Tina Fey’s Bossypants, as divulging as Ayelet Waldman’s Bad Mother and as earthy as Cheryl Strayed’s Wild.” (Holloway McCandless, Shelf Awareness)

“Ingeniously funny….In her brilliant, original voice, Moran successfully entertains and enlightens her audience with hard-won wisdom and wit….She doesn’t politicize feminism; she humanizes it.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))

“Caitlin Moran is so fabulous, so funny, so freshly feminist. I don’t want to be like her—I want to be her. But if I can’t, at least I can relish her book. You will, too.” (Peggy Orenstein, author of Cinderella Ate My Daughter)

“Her arguments are hilarious and spot on….This isn’t a self-help guide, and Moran’s not really telling you how to be a woman. Instead, she’s giving you permission to laugh: at ourselves, at her, and at anyone who think there’s only one way to be a woman.” (Shannon Carlin, Bust Magazine)

“How funny is Caitlin Moran’s neo-feminist manifesto and memoir, How to Be a Woman? Don’t read it with a full bladder….You could spend a whole book group session flagging favorite lines…..There’s some comfort in Moran’s book coming out so soon after Nora Ephron’s death.” (Heller McAlpin, Barnes & Noble Review)

“A spirited memoir/manifesto….With equal amounts snarky brio and righteous anger….That such an important topic is couched in ribald humor makes reading about Moran’s journey hilarious as well as provocative….Rapturously irreverent, this book should kick-start plenty of useful discussions.” (Kirkus Reviews (starred review))

“Caitlin Moran is a feminist heroine for our times. I can’t wait to give this book to my daughters.” (Zoë Heller, author of The Believers)

“Caitlin Moran is the profane, witty and wonky best friend I wish I had. She’s the feminist rock star we need right now; How to Be a Woman is an hilarious delight.” (Ayelet Waldman, author of Bad Mother)

From the Back Cover

Though they have the vote and the Pill and haven't been burned as witches since 1727, life isn't exactly a stroll down the catwalk for modern women. They are beset by uncertainties and questions: Why are they supposed to get Brazilians? Why do bras hurt? Why the incessant talk about babies? And do men secretly hate them?

Caitlin Moran interweaves provocative observations on women's lives with laugh-out-loud funny scenes from her own, from the riot of adolescence to her development as a writer, wife, and mother. With rapier wit, Moran slices right to the truth—whether it's about the workplace, strip clubs, love, fat, abortion, popular entertainment, or children—to jump-start a new conversation about feminism. With humor, insight, and verve, How To Be a Woman lays bare the reasons why female rights and empowerment are essential issues not only for women today but also for society itself.

About the Author

Caitlin Moran's debut book, How to Be a Woman, was an instant New York Times bestseller. How to Build a Girl is her first novel since the one she wrote at fourteen, which doesn't count.

I read this book and laughed a lot while doing so.

Then I had to face the acid test. I handed it to my wife - the professional nay-sayer, the woman who thinks that puns are not funny - and told her to open it at random and start reading. I expected to have it back within seconds with a dismissive remark, but instead she started reading it, chuckling occasionally, and when she turned the page she put her fingers under the next page, the quicker to read it. I asked her what the chuckles were for, but she didn't answer and kept on reading. Then she laughed so hard she nearly fell off the chair. She looked at me and said, "She's good."

I said "I've finished it, you can read it," but she insisted that I write my review first. That makes sense, considering that she has a bunch of friends that she passes on books to that she thinks are important (books, that is). So here it is.

And the only thing I can say I said in the review title - Buy it. It's the funniest book I've read this year, and probably the last year as well. Billed as a "feminist" book, by American standards it is not academic enough and way too funny, yet it addresses some of the major issues woman have like what to name your sexual parts, your pubic hair and so on. There's also a great deal of stuff on how women are sucked up into the vortex of buying clothes and high heels, having Brazilian waxes, and plenty more. The book is a vague memoir of life since she was thirteen, living in close-to-poverty, yet she managed to win a national newspaper essay competition and get on the staff of the prestigious Melody Maker Brit-pop rag in just the next three years. She also started her career as a national newspaper columnist (most of which was spent in the London Times) and hosted some TV shows.

You might expect this to be the story of some bimbo blonde dolly, or a Kardashian sister. But Caitlin at 35 is in many ways obviously still Caitlin at 13, and she manages to be extremely funny. At thirteen, and able to borrow adult library books, she "has struck filth gold," by reading Jilly Cooper's "Riders," a semi pornographic novel from the 1980s - naturally you can get it from Amazon US Riders. Then she grows pubic hair and shaves it off after her mother draws the whole family's attention to it in the living room.

Eventually she moves the hundred and thirty miles to London, marries and has a couple of children, the birth of which she describes in excruciating but hilarious detail. In her capacity as pop music critic she interviews Lady Gaga in a revealing yet drunken way.

And gradually she becomes aware of the role of women in society. As she says, "The patriarchy must be knackered by now. It's been 100,000 years without even a tea break: men have been ruling the world. They have been balls to the wall." She wants "some sort of flextime" where women ruled the world half of the time, while the men can "really sort out the shed, once and for all." She makes it clear she doesn't hate men, and her variety of feminism is more warm and funny than burning your (underwired and painful) bra.

Where is the American Caitlin Moran? The cover hints at Tina Fey, but although I haven't seen much of Tina Fey I doubt she's an equivalent of Caitlin Moran.

So you should buy this book. Yes, that means you - Woman, Man, and what Flickr calls "Other." Just be sure to take your ass with you when you laugh it off. And you will.

More For The Younger 20's and 30's Crowd
By Wilhelmina Zeitgeist
"How to Be a Woman" by Caitlin Moran had its ups and downs for me. It started out as a winner in my mind but seemed to get stuck on certain topics for much to long. Other topics didn't really hold much of an interest for me either.

Now, to be fair, I think I'm older than the target audience. While reading it I often thought of how I would have enjoyed the book more when I was younger. Some of the issues that must be very pressing to young women today just made me shake my head as I began to reminisce about the good old days when shaving our legs and arm pits was good enough for the men in our lives. No wonder so many younger women aren't happier. They are spending all of their free time worrying about body hair and all of their free time getting rid of it.

Marriage, kids, work, inter-office romance....I've seen it all. A case of the middle aged been there done that. But, it's all new to the younger women. They need to know these things and need to think about them.

I do like Caitlin's definition of what it takes to decide if you are a feminist or not. It made a lot of sense and was so much easier to understand than the speeches we had to listen to and Phil Donahue Shows we had to watch in the 70's. Back when we were first trying to figure out what a feminist was, could we be one, and if we were could we still keep our boyfriends. The younger women will love this book. The post menopausal space age boomers probably won't.

Finally! A fun, hopeful, feminist book!
By dSavannah
I AM A STRIDENT FEMINIST! There, I said it, as the author instructed. But it's true, and I have been, for as long as I can remember knowing what that even meant. And I have to say, this is the first "feminist book" that actually made me feel hopeful and happy and glad to be a woman. Others (such as "Crazy Salad Plus Nine" by the wonderful Nora Ephron) just made me angry - because so little has changed for women. We're still - 30+ years after she wrote it - marginalized and "different".

"How to Be a Woman" explains this 'difference' in a no-nonsense and hilarious way. For example, in the chapter titled "I Encounter Some Sexism!", the author says, "We are, physically, the weaker sex. We're not as good at hefting stones, killing mammoths, and rowing boats. In addition, sex often had the added complication of getting us pregnant and leaving us feeling 'too fat' to lead an army into India."

The author honestly and unflinchingly looks at many topics that plaque women:
~what happens when puberty hits (the periods! the hair growth!)
~the 'thin' vs 'fat' issue (and how the term "fat" is used as a curse and a slur)
~sexism (in the workplace and out)
~falling in love, getting married, and having kids (why you should, and why you shouldn't)
~abortion
~the "maintenance" we have to do on ourselves (waxes, etc.)
~and getting older

And it's all presented in an uplifting, positive, honest, and hilarious way. I did NOT want this book to end. And I want to give copies to everyone important in my life.

A few notes - as other reviewers have stated, there is all kinds of crude language as well as mentions of drug and alcohol use, none of which bothered me personally, but... this is, obviously, not for everyone... and unfortunately many of the people who need this book the MOST may not read it because of this. (For instance, I would love to give copies for my niece {13} and goddaughter {10}, but I'm sure their moms would be none too happy with me if I did - because of the language.)

Also, calling this the "British version of Tina Fey's 'Bossypants'" is a disservice to both books. The only similarities are that they are both by women, and both authors are funny, and both of them talk about their childhoods and careers. Otherwise, they are entirely different. Mind you, I thoroughly enjoyed "Bossypants", but it does not have nearly the heft of depth of "How to be a Woman". It's kinda like comparing cotton candy with a milky way.

And finally, although the US publishers tried to "Americanize" the book, there were still a few things I didn't quite "get" and had to look up. (Now, this may have changed in the final version; I read an uncorrected proof.) A little more explanation could have been helpful.

I highly highly highly recommend this book - and would give it 1,000 stars if amazon would let me.
