terrific 2-part story

This is an excellent and satisfying conclusion to Mary and Rathe's love story. With an erotic, angst-filled plot line leading to their HEA. In fact, this has been the best story of Marion Tee because unlike her other books....SPOILER ALERT...the hero does NOT end up in bed with another women with the heroine forgiving him as it usually does in her other stories. The only true complaint I have about her books is the hero always ends up having sex with someone else before they find their happy ending. I understand that it makes for a more poignant reunion between the h/h but why does it have to be the plot in every story? Otherwise, I love Marion Tee's books and recommend them to anyone who enjoys "light" erotic stories.

Worth the wait

Another awesome read by Marian Tee!! Could not put it down loved every single moment!! From start to finish it will leave you on the edge of you bed!! Lol wonderful twist n turns to get the best ending ever. Rathe and Mary's story tops off the pussketeers series but I'm hoping Marian will give us a little after HEA for all these sexy men n their extraordinary women.

Great! Kind of heartbreaking.

Yay! We finally have the second half of Rathe and Mary' story. I absolutely love it! Well I love all her books so it's no surprise.

We get to see about Rathe's parents and learn something about them which I might say I did not see coming. Another great twist to the story. Although how Rathe planned to her back, it was very different and I was right on my hunch when I suspected how Ms. Tee will end it. At the same time it's sweet and very hot. And loved the funny hot scenes.

Oh, and I'm glad that the evil person in part one got his just desserts. I was looking forward to that part.

We also get to see the other Pusketeers. I loved Saffi. And how she takes her pics and posts them on her twitter. Loved the caption. She never changed.

Excellent WIF resource

This is a must have for any anyone tasked with writing claims aware applicatons. Do NOT let the size of this book fool you either - it is jammed full of critical details. This is the only publication available that goes into the detail that Vittorio goes into. Whether you're new to claims-based development and just want to know enough to get started writing Relying Party's (that's about the first 50 pages), or need the in-depth knowledge of how protocols work, intricate details of WSFAM and SAM, and such, this book has you covered. I also like how Vittorio draws attention to solutions to some common problems, such as home-realm discovery, pass through claims, impersonation, proof-of-possession, custom STS's, and more. You will also find references to some very useful tools to aid in your development.

Excellent resource to get started with WIF

Having followed Vittorio's work (blog, webcasts, code samples)related to claims-based identity over the last two-three years, I ordered this book as soon as it arrived. And this book did not disappoint. I read the book cover-to-cover within a week of its arrival and found it to be very useful in helping me better understand the concepts behind WIF.

Here are some additional details that I hope will be helpful to anyone considering this book:

1) Claims based identity is an important enabling technology that .NET developers and designer need to understand well. And this is not just case, if you are an ASP.NET or WCF developer. Claims-based identity is important even if you are SharePoint, BI or Azure developer.

2) This book is broken up into two parts. The first part explains the basics of claims based identity. Second part is more advanced and gets into the nuts and bolts of WIF.

3) Don't skip over the ASP.NET chapters (2, 3 & 4 ) just because you are not going to use WIF inside ASP.NET. These aforementioned chapters cover a number of important concepts ( such as single-sign-on, claims transformation, federation) that you will need to understand when using WIF outside of ASP.NET (say with WCF).

4) Being involved with the WIF team for a long time, Vittorio is able to provide important context around how some of the features have evolved, design decisions etc.

5) Last but not the least, it is hard to write a book on security. Fortunately, Vittorio has managed to write it in a conversational, unassuming style that makes it easy to read. Wherever needed, he provides a just in time, overview of protocols ( WS-Trust, WS-Federation and so on) without getting mired in the details associated with these, rather arcane, specifications.

Long on Talk, Short on Code

If you're looking for a semi-exhaustive explanation of plumbing and details, this might be the book for you. Maybe.

I was looking for some code samples and reasonable quick-start type guides to at least get a proof of concept up and running, but there is no sort of cohesion to the book that makes it possible. The first part labors on about federated identity and fundamentals, which is fine to an extent. However, it just keeps going on with theory... again, which is fine if you want to sit and read a book to learn about federated security.

A preferred approach, and the one followed by most good technical books, is to start with a basic example and explain the theory behind it in small chunks.

I was surprised by how frustrating this book is based on the other reviews, so maybe I'm missing something everyone else is getting. But, if you're looking for a reasonable quick start to WIF with meat to back up the code, this probably isn't a good fit for you.

Baggett, an associate professor of religion and society at the Jesuit School of Theology, Berkeley, Calif., takes on the term cafeteria Catholic in this study of American Catholics. He dislikes the description, commonly applied to liberal Catholics who select which church teachings they will accept, because of the suggestion that such choices are made casually. His findings, based on interviews with 300 Catholics at six Bay Area parishes, show that most Catholics make similar selections and that they do so thoughtfully. He says Catholics live their faith by negotiating with the broader tradition, reframing it through use of evocative symbols to create religious truths and refreshing it by mingling Catholic symbols with cultural ones. Baggett quotes extensively from the interviews he and his team conducted and tallies the results in a series of charts, often comparing what he learned with the work of other researchers, especially sociologist Thomas O'Dea. His rather academic presentation will primarily interest other scholars and perhaps reform-minded church leaders, rather than the Catholic layperson. (Dec.)

A Very Insightful Sociological Snapshot

I think this is a fantastic book on American Catholics. First of all, it's beautifully written; I'm not used to sociology books being such a page-turner. Second, the author actually listened to real-life Catholics -- liberal and conservative, gay and straight, afluent and poor, people of different races and ethnicities -- and is very nuanced in his teasing out the trends in their thinking and ways of being religious. Finally, Baggett uses sociological theory to make some very sophisticated observations about how the people in the pews draw upon Catholic (and other) symbols and narratives to provide a sense of meaning to their lives. Honestly, I think as many Catholics as possible (as well as other people interested in the important changes in American religion more generally) should read this book in order to get beyond the stereotypes that keep people from really understanding one another. This is a wonderful book.

A valuable sociological study

This book is primarily a sociological study, so anyone looking for a discussion of the concept of Sensus Fidelii needs to be aware that it is provided obliquely via the author's study of parishes in the North Bay (CA) area. I found many of his fidnings to be reflective of views in Southern California also. Whether his findings hold up elsewhere in the nation would be an interesting read also - and a possible subject for another study. This is an excellent descriptive study - a little dry for those looking for a more expository approach and not inclined to study charts and data. It is an important study and one which every Bishop, priest and lay person ought to be familiar with.

Are American Catholics Less Religious Than Their Predecessors?

Today's conventional wisdom is that American Catholics are less religious than their predecessors. Jerome Baggett, author and professor, in his landmark study, "Sense of the Faithful," set out to ascertain this perceived reality by studying how Catholics are practicing their faith today.

The author characterizes his book as a conversation piece..."the result of many conversations about present-day American Catholicism with students and colleagues at the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley." He learned that there was very little known "about the people in the pews and how they find meaning in their two thousand year old religious tradition." And so he began his journey to find the "nonofficial" viewpoints expressed by the "rank and file."

"Sense of the Faithful" is based on conversations with nearly 300 active members of six Catholic parishes in the San Francisco Bay area:
* Saint Mary - Saint Francis de Sales, Oakland's first parish and one that celebrates cultural diversity with three distinct worship communities and fewer than 900 parishioners;
* Saint Louis Bertrand, an inner city parish in East Oakland, a 2500 member Initially, African-American and Latino parish few resources available and a focus on enhancing family life;
* St. Augustine, a growing "progressive" suburban 4000 family, mostly Anglo parish in Pleasanton with 64 innovative programs, focused on fostering a sense of community;
* St. Margaret Mary, a destination parish of "cultural resistance" in downtown Oakland where Missals are mostly in Latin with Latin Mass offered, where parish activities are mostly focused on liturgy...still done "correctly," and is not about meeting people's emotional, social or non-sacramental needs.
* Most Holy Redeemer located in San Francisco's gay and lesbian Castro District, a 1000 member mostly childless parish, openly gay and "resiliently Catholic," an occasional lightning rod for gay activists who are angry at the Church, and offering a widely respected AIDS support group;
* St. Monica, a 1500 family, overwhelmingly Anglo parish that feels it is more progressive than most, situated in the affluent town of Moraga, with an impressive menu of activities, and a focus on enhancing family life.

The view from the ground-level gives pause to the idea that Catholics today are less religious. Baggett found that all he spoke with took their faith tradition seriously. "They may be different in how they practice their faith but they are hardly less religious. There is little evidence that Catholics have waning religious sentiments."

"Parishioners showed remarkable candor and seriousness expressing the faith, doubt, and religious community often lacking in the current discourse. It was made clear that in the face of the myriad complexities and tensions that mark one's religious lives, it is obvious that pious platitudes, anachronistic verities, and "holier than thou" accusations that frequent this discourse do not suffice."

"Sense of the Faithful" is packed with insights gained from Baggett's conversations. In addition, the author provides history and context for us to discern the realities of today's "Catholic in the pews" and that of an evolving religious tradition. At the end, he looks at the paradox of religious traditions, characterized by both stasis and flux - "traditions conserve cultural meanings for new generations of people who, in reinterpreting these as novel situations require, ultimately alter those very meanings...with a theme woven throughout the book that the ending of one iteration of a religious tradition is often tantamount to the beginning of another."

"Sense of the Faithful" is not a quick read and requires a commitment to grasp all that Baggett delivers.

Eye-opening

It's almost frightening how evil can inch its way into organizations and you really don't know it is happening until it is too late. Dazed & Confused

This text was required reading in an Internet marketing class I took. As an about-to-graduate business major, I felt the book often strayed off it's subject matter (e-commerce) and too often went into excrutiating detail about how businesses operate. Although I did not read every chapter, the sections I did read were repetitive and confusing to follow. For example, the concept of "catalog content management" is defined and discussed at least three times in one chapter. To say this book is thorough is an understatement. There are many sections that could have been deleted with no loss of meaning to the subject matter. The book is probably OK for beginning business majors who have yet to take lots of business classes. However, for those who are more familiar with business, you will probably find yourself skimming over this text looking for the information you want. If you're looking for a general overview of e-commerce, this is not the book for you. If you want more detail than you thought existed . . . well, I'm selling my copy in the used book section of this site :)
